Heavy Ball ammo in SVT-40's

Hey guys,

Just curious what your guys experience is on firing "above 150gr ball ammo" in your SVT-40's

What gas settings did you end up settling on, is there a possibility of gas system/piston damage from prolonged heavy ball use?.

Yu could try to use it on the lowest sting its will reliably cycle regardless of bullets weight, if you do that there shouldn't be any damage to the rifle on the long term.

May i also I would suggest anyone with a gun with a sticky to read them. They are well done and your are sure to learn a thing of two.
 
Just dial you gas setting down to the lowest, then increase as needed until you get flawless operation. I wouldn't be too worried about damaging anything as springs will always wear out over time. You can buy a set of replacement springs for the SVT online. I'd post a link for you, but I'm feeling lazy.
 
Thanks for the input guys, I was just a little concered with "battering" the piston, bolt assembly ect from heavy rounds, some people warn online that it can cause damage but I wasn't really sure if it was all B.S. or not.
 
Wasn't the original round for the SVT somewhere in the realm of 170 grains anyway? I've shot rounds as heavy as 205 grain in mine with no ill effect.

To damage an SVT with heavy ball, you would need a gas setting to high and also to fire lot and lot of ammo. Adjust your gas correctly and you will be fine.

I have actually tried S&B 180 gr and Yugo surplus 180 gr M31 ball in my SVT40 and got horrible results to be honest.

The rifle functioned flawlessly with a slight adjustment of the gas valve but the groupings went all the hell.

Switched back to good old 147gr Russian ball and she was back to 3-4" groups at 100 meters again :D

Interesting, thank you for the input. How is the bore in your rifle just for curiosities sake?

The bore was solid. A little dark but the rifling was sharp and strong.

It shot 147 gr surplus like nobodies business. 3-4" groups at 100 meters!

Switched to heavy projectiles and it went to hell for groupings. I tried it on 3 separate occasions as well, same results.
