Heavy Magnums in a Rem 1100

Just bought an older Rem 1100 with a 2 3/4" chamber and a full choke. I'm not sure what I'm gonna use it for, but thought it might be my designated coyote gun. I want to shoot lead BB or buckshot out of it. I used 1 1/2 ounce Federal BB loads on coyotes before ( in a different gun) with some good success. I got to wondering how well this gun will cycle heavy ammo and if there is any risk of damaging it. The alternative is dragging my Beretta A400 Unico around and risk banging it up.

Any thoughts?

The gun will handle the loads. BUT if you have a target barrel i.e. TRAP or SKEET the gas ports are sized to reliably cycle 1 1/8 oz. target loads. The loads you mention will beat the gun up .

The gas ports and the bolt carrier spring are optimized for target loads. The higher gas pressure generated by a magnum load will cause the bolt carrier to move back faster than it is designed to. Over time, this may peen the receiver or cause part failure.

Rem 1100 tend to be one trick ponys. If you want to use magnum loads, albeit in 2 3/4 dimension, get a 3 inch magnum barrel. Just limit yourself to 2 3/4 in. shells, as the loading port on your receiver and ejector hard stop are designed for the shorter shells.

From what I've read there are two different 2 3/4" barrels. Both have two gas ports. The skeet barrel has #44 ports and the "fleild" barrel has #48 sized ports. The field barrels with the smaller ports can handle the bigger loads. I'm assuming mine is the field barrel, but I will measure it using a set of index(I think that's the right word) bits and see for sure.

Skeet barrels will be marked "Skeet" Trap barrels are usually 30" with two beads, mid rib and front. They are usually marked "Full". I love the 1100 (I own three) your idea of measuring the ports is a good one. Even field barrels have been monkeyed with to allow cycling of super light loads by opening the ports.

I appreciate the great info. Do you know if the port sizes (#48 and #44) I mentioned are correct? And is there any way to restrict them? JB weld placed carefully or something to that effect? I have cycled 1 oz shot through it and it worked well.
 
I ran magnum loads for geese and for deer out of my 2,75 inch rem 1100 for many many years and so have a few guys I grew up with ,no have ever had any kind of problem other then a o ring from time to time ,,Dutch

Yes mine has the two #47 which is what I figured it would have. I should be good to go with any 2 3/4" load.
