I had a few SKS refurbish sks recently. At first they looked OK, i could deal with them for sub 150$ each but after 10 or so trips I noticed the BBQ paint didn't last, allot of the refurbish parts show pre mature wear like the firing pin, trigger spring rusty, gas piston was corroded and What I thought was cosmoline was actually heavy rust all over. I was pretty frustrated, I bought my last first sks probably over a year ago and it was one of the #1 super grades and no matter what I did to it, it cleaned up great. Bluing was perfect, Some of these refurb sks's should not even be sold anywhere near 200$.

Anyone else frustrated these things are even sold? What dealer is selling good sks? If I'm paying 200$ I expect a decent SKS not some bbq paint BS that Is better off being used and my boat paddle.

Yeah I hear you man, as soon as one of my later sks purchase's had a scratch and revealed orange metal I knew what that meant. Out of the eight sks's I've bought, only had three good blued ones and also hated those stupid black bolt BBQ paint ones. Been warning as many people about these atrocious refurbed sks and telling them to find a nice blued one.

exact same for me, 8 sks and 3 "good" ones. I had to wait and wait for them too.

I have no issues with black bolts that are blued. Most vendors and stores have BBQ paint receiver's, barrels etc. Even most of Weimajacks are BBQ, unless stipulated in the ad.

I have a blued and a black version, both have been solid. The black has been seeing more use of late and the finish hasn't chipped or flaked let alone shown signs of rust. I got it in one of Canam's sks+ammo combo, no complaints. It's an accurate shooter, as is the blued one I got from Lever Arms.

My BBQ painted SKS refurb has not worn well either. It's an SKS and I beat the daylights out of it all the time. It's showing its wear around the receiver, bolt and carrier area. It's nice having firearm that I really don't care about though. I only shoot corrosive ammo and clean it after every use but it's looking like it's been shot a lot. BBQ paint SKS, perfect "truck gun" as they say. Shoot it lots and forget about it being a pristine safe queen. The BBQ paint looks great when new IMO.

If you're only going to own one SKS and really take care of it, a blued one would be worth seeking out. If your really going to shoot it and use it, IMO, it doesn't matter.
