Hey all,

My name is Rob, and I just recently came across this forum. I’m fairly new to firearms despite having had my PAL for about ten years (originally got it for work but never really ended up needing it).

Last autumn (fall of 2010) I purchased a Remington 870, and have since been having a lot of fun tossing clays in pits with friends. I’m 29 years of age, but this will be my first year hunting. I grew up in a family of non-hunters, so never really had anybody to show me the ropes in that regard. I finally decided to just start things up on my own because it is something I’ve always wanted to do, and saw about getting my Ontario Hunter Education course this past winter.

Currently I’ve only got a small game license, and I will be heading out in search of grouse for the first time ever tomorrow along with a more experienced co-worker. I like the idea of grouse hunting because it will be something I can do on my own without needing a group of people to go along with.

Thus far my shooting experience is limited to 12 gauges and .22’s, but I hope to get some time practicing with centre fire rifles this fall, and then maybe I can step up my hunting game next year.

I’m a married father of two with a boring day job. By night, I write fiction and I recently sold my first piece to a publisher (a short story that is post-apocalyptic in nature, with a shotgun-toting main character, lol. Go figure, eh?).

Anyway, greetings to all and I appreciate all the knowledge this forum has to offer!

Hello, welcome, and congratulations on your sale. I believe you'll find you get better response to your comments if you post them in a forum like "General Firearms Discussion". This one is really just for greetings. By the way, you'll want to be careful about what load you use in your 12-gauge for grouse. You might not have much to eat. Enjoy the site.

Thanks for the welcome. I posted here because I'm introducing myself, and this is the introduction section.... Seemed logical, haha.

And I'll be sure to aim a little high with that twelve gauge tomorrow! I'll be using the modified choke that came with the 870 and since grouse are typically at such short range, I'm hoping that the combination of the choke and the limited range will keep my pattern tight enough to not blow up the darn birds! Should be alright, I think....

You can do a lot with a 12g and a .22, but whatever you decide to move onto there is an amazing group of people here that can give you all the help and advice you will need, and if you can get your head around the search feature hours of reading as well.
Get access to the EE and find yourself some great deals, but be careful or your collection will grow fast!

Thanks for the welcomes!

I did end up heading out hunting for my first time today and I bagged myself two ruffed grouse, one shot on the ground while the second was knocked from his tree after fleeing from the sound of my first shot. My co-worker that I was out hunting with missed a couple ruffies but redeemed himself by nailing a spruce grouse later in the day.
