Well I found out today that my PAL/RPAL has been approved and released in the mail, 28 days exactly after it was received by CFC (I think I figured out how to shorten the wait to the minimum period - as soon as they call you about the application, you immediately have your references call THEM, and it all gets done the same day with no phone tag).
Anyway, for a month I've been lining up mail order purchases: Mossberg 590A1, Mini-14, Remington .308, a couple of .22s, a couple of handguns, from all across the country. All just waiting for my PAL number and ATT. And maybe a couple of SKSs from Alberta. Oh yeah, and I've kind of got my eye on that sweet brass Henry 'Big Boy' .44 lever action rifle...
Anyway I'm much looking forward to shooting again. Spent a number of years as a reservist (BC Dragoons, Seaforth Highlanders) and miss certain aspects of it. Now have a wife and kids interested in the sport, and a bit of money to burn since selling out of my last hobby (parted with my home built 96" Harley bobber), so thought it would be the right time. I live and work between Victoria and Vancouver, and am hoping to join ranges on both sides of the Strait.
Memo to Lever Arms, my closest retail store: I really wanted to spend $5000 with you, and you had many of the guns I wanted in stock. But you refused to sell them to me on layaway, even though I offered to pay 100% up front. As a result, you lost the business to P&D (2 Ruger rifles), Wholesale Sports (Mossberg), Police Ordnance Inc. (Glock and .22 adapter kit), Frontier Firearms (coach gun and target scope), Italian Sporting Goods (Remington 700), moving target (SKS x 2, pending availability) and a neat little store in Mackenzie (target pistol), each of whom happily agreed to hold my purchases pending my PAL approval. I'm not really complaining, I just want you to know how much business you're throwing away to your competitors in case you want to rethink your policy.
Anyway, this site has been, by far, my most useful research tool and resource. Thanks to all for putting it all together and contributing your knowledge and experience.
Mossman.
