Hi all,

I am a late 30s researcher who now finds himself needing a PAL to get a shotgun for personal protection while in the bush. I shot a little as a kid (.22s, some shotgun) and a little shotgun, but the hunting side of the family was pretty distant from my upbringing. Most recently I ran 100 rounds of .38 special through a buddy's .357 Magnum--about 15 years ago.

I have already learned a lot from reading the forum, and look forward to learning a lot more. Next Thursday is my non-restricted class and I'm getting excited!

If you can go down to AHEIA early and buy the book so you can read over it before you go to the class, that way it's more of a review/clarification for when you get instructed on what you'll be tested on. They cost about $15.

If I were you I would go ahead and get your restricted license as well at the same time. It will only take you about another 2 hours and the paperwork will be sent in at the same time and same cost. Then you are done and do not need to worry about it again in the near future. And if you see a pistol on a year or two that you would love to own you are already authorized to go for it!

I thought about doing both restricted and non-restricted, until I saw the paperwork involved in transporting restricted, and decided it was too much of a hassle for my needs. But, with enough prestudy the course should go quickly and perhaps they could tack on the restricted anyway.

Welcome!
When I got my PAL, I thought it would be too much of a hassle to have restricted firearms too.
It wasn't long before the bug got me and I needed my RPAL. You really should just go ahead and get it done.
