Hello From Edmonton

Hey

I'm a student at the U of A, and I'm pretty much brand new to everything firearms related. I went shooting with a friend for the first time last november and I'm pretty much hooked. I'm contemplating purchasing a firearm sometime in the near future and I was wondering if anyone has any advice for a first time owner? Is there anything you wish you had known just starting out?

Hi Cassie
I shoot out at the Spruce Grove gun club and have a few .22 caliber
rifles and hand guns you could try out before you buy. Best advice I
can give is get a .22 first as they are easier to learn proper technique on.

Hi Cassie
I also live in Edmonton. 22 rimfire is a great place to start for practice. Ammo is cheap as well as the firearms. If you do choose to go centerfire there are a few things to think about. If you buy a brand new centerfire rifle study up on the proper method of breaking in that new barrel. This will save you a lot of cleaning time later on. Save your empty brass whether you handload or not. Never shoot handloads that you got from someone else. Always wear hearing and eye protection. Keep your guns clean and lubricated. give them a wipe down with some kind of oil/protectant before you put them back in the safe (rust never sleeps). If you look after your guns they will only appreciate in value. Once you get serious, or get into hand guns you can save a pile of money handloading your own. There are a few good gun ranges in the Edmonton area. I hope this helps, good luck.

There's a lot of different opinions on breaking in barrels. Google can help you out there, I think Lilja (a barrel maker) has a nice document on thier website.

I'd also suggest you check out Phoenix indoor range if you like shooting pistols indoors.

Welcome aboard, Newbie! :D

Phoenix is also a good place to go for pistol shooting (they're also half price all day every day for the ladies) and barring that, I suggest you look at this thread here http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99327 to link up with those of us who are willing to mentor/take new shooters to the range. That way you can try out a variety of guns that you can't get a chance to shoot at the indoor ranges.

You can also keep an eye on the Events and Gatherings forum for topics on upcoming matches (Service rifle/pistol, sniper, clay shoots) get togethers (Gunshows, coffee meets and pub nights) as well as shooting trips (Like the "world famous" Edmonton Gopher Outings.)

Any reason to get out and shoot is a good reason.

I assume you already have your license?
Ruger MKII/III are fun and cheap if you want to start with a .22.

What are you studying?

I've been to Phoenix once with a friend in February, and I'm sure I'll go back again. He is kind of mentoring me, you could say, though I will keep my eye open for get togethers like you suggested Grizz. I took the restricted and unrestricted safety courses last week, and I'm sending off my paperwork as soon as my exams at school are over. I'm finishing up my third year of Mechanical Engineering.

Congrats on your schooling and on getting your courses out of the way. I concur with the others that starting handgunning with a .22 is a great inexpensive way to shoot and learn the essentials. I started with a 12G and a trap thrower - loved it and would recommend it to anyone.
Welcome aboard

Welcome aboard!!! If you get a chance you should try shotgunning(trap, skeet, sporting clays etc.) My wife and kids love as much as I do!! Remember all guns are sacred.....from bows to full-autos!!

Hi Cass,

Glad to see you got a lot of pointers and good tips already. Took me a while to find you on here.

Like I told you before CGN is awesome for info. Have a good day studying. I know you really don't need it for Econ. Remember, we are going out at 4:30 if you've forgotten.

No4T, M1D, Hung. 91/30 PU scope, AR-15 is what I'm bringing. Anything else you wanted? PM if you remember.

Cheers kiddo

PS guys, she's pretty lethal with a 9mm at 10 yards. About 2" groupings consistently. She's gonna start working out at about 17 yards soon.
