Hello from Southwest Ontario

I am new to the site and this post will just get lost in the thousands that are here already. None the less good to see the interest is live and well. Personally I just like to plink and shoot things that don't bleed. Don't get me wrong I live on 20 acres in the woods in Southwest Ontario and lots of critters visit. If they are a pest and feel my house could be their home, they are quick to find out that isn't possible and either move on or get shot. I would hunt and did hunt as a kid but don't have the urge to hunt right now so plinking it is.

My son also likes to do target shooting. He is a very good shot. I have started a fall hunt I call the "Great Pumpkin Hunt" We collect Jack-O-Lanterns and my wife hides them in the woods. Jake and I go out blasting. The pumpkins don't have a chance.

The reason I joined this site is I am looking for a specific firearm that is not made anymore so I am told. I would like to get a Savage Model 24D Combo gum a 22 magnum over a 410 or a 22 hornet over a 20 gauge. I have been reading about the firearm and feel it would be the perfect all around gun to carry in the bush when out for a walk. Coyotes are on the rise around here so if they are close enough they will be feeding the buzzards.

Anyway if anyone know where one is available I would appreciate the opportunity to obtain one. This thread could also be used to discuss the same type of Combo gun produced by other manufacturers. I was considering the Russian made one but have heard various opinions on them so I am undecided at the moment.

Hope to here from someone. Greeting to all and Safe Journey.

This site is very nicely setup but for some reason I can't read any posts in the EE sections. It would be nice to find an area of buy and sell of firearms and/or opinions of various firearms to aid you when you are considering them for purchase. Even tips when making a purchase and questions to ask the buyer.

I did a search & could not see any Savage 24D for sale.
However if you can get onto that forum then you can post that you are looking to buy one.

I had one many years ago. It was a nice gun. Should have kept it. Should have kept a lot of guns in hindsight.

Welcome to CGN.

I just checked Ellwood Epps website ( See top of this page ) & they have 2 used good condition ones in stock. Both are 22LR over 410 which is not exactly what you are looking for though. Close.

Look on the top left: user CP, group memberships. You have to make a request to be granted access to the EE sections. That's it.

Thanks for looking, yes I have viewed his website. I was first in that store over 30 years ago. From the outside me though Man what a dump. Walked inside and a whole new world was there. I have been in there in the fall and it was standing room only kind of thing and the place was in the middle of nowhere.

Haven't been back there in many years now but I don't see why it would change any. Someone else responded to my post about the Model 24 saying they wish they had never sold theirs, you read that alot about this firearm. Its seems to be a favourite, hence the reason hard to find. I would go over the border to try to find one as they are more plentiful down there but I can just imagine the hassle bringing it back accross. There is something I would like to find out about.

Basicly any model 24 with a 22 Hornet/ 410 or 20ga or 22 magnum/ 410 or 20ga would be interesting There was a .222/ 20 ga. at Gobles in London but I didn't jump fast enough. The .222 ammunition is a little costly for plinking (I am thrifty(cheap) at heart) so it would make more sense to stay with the Magnum or Hornet for power. I'll keep searching, there is bound to be one out there for me.

I would love to post some pictures of the wildlife around my home. Presently we have deer, turkeys, raccoons, a possum, rabbits and lots of birds hanging around the house. The house is 900 feet back from the road in the middle of a woods. Wildlife is common to see while having morning coffee. I lost my dog to old age a little over a year ago so the critters don't feel threatened anymore. Last count was 28 turkeys.

It seems to me I may be looking for a needle in a haystack when it comes to a Combo Gun. There is a Russian made model out there called a IHZ 94, and Remington makes; or should I say has made for them the SPR94 by the same little town in Russia that makes the IHZ.

I have researched the IZH brand, there seems to be quite a few different firearms made by them. I would assume they are not new at this business and I have read good and bad about this manufacturer, Remington no longer has them produce the SPR94 for them, it could be cause with the Remington name on it they are asking $50 to $100 more for it then the IZH.

So I am looking for opinions of IZH, probably opening a can of worms on this and I don't wish to start a war, just looking for opinions on performance, fit and finish of their guns and all around craftmanship of the company.

It seem to me I could be waiting a while for a Model 24 to become available or for Savage to start producing them again so I might consider an IZH. I had one in my hands ans it felt pretty good, I think the weight was somewhere in the 7 lb. mark. Overall appearance seems OK but not being that familiar with the others available, maybe thats the difference in price.

Talking to some "old timers" (older than me anyways) says don't buy an IZH. I am not really sure why though. Here is your chance, please give me your opinions they are all welcome.

BTW The temperature dipped to -23Cº this morning so shooting in cold weather should be considered as well, something I would think the Russian would be familiar with :>).
