Hello from the Ottawa Valley.

Good Day Gents, I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Brent and I have been hunting in the upper Ottawa Valley since I was 14 (34 now). Mostly migratory birds, partridge, and deer. I have hunted for a few years around Ottawa, but found there to be too many hunters in a small location and at times too much reliance on the dog( for deer).

I now hunt back on the family farm ( Quebec side- no dogs allowed), where I have lots of space -400 Acres, and know who I am hunting with. I have hunted for years with my Old 1918 Lee enfield 303, but my father asks me once a month when I will be getting a new gun. The Enfield has been great, but to tell the truth, I wouldn't mind a gun, my age or newer(Although I would be tempted by a Savage 99 308) .

So that leads me to your site, to read submissions and experiences, and determine what my next rifle will be. Hopefully, I will be able to contribute, some of my experiences to some of the current threads.

Cheers
Brent

Welcome aboard! :D
Beautiful area up there!
I lived in Petawawa then Beachburg for a total of 4+ years... loved it.
I would move back there in a heartbeat if circumstances permited! ;)

Yes it is beautiful. I grew up on Allumettes Island, small english farming community, right across from Pembroke, maybe 25 minutes from Petawawa. From the foot of the island we look across to Westmeath.

Plenty of fishing, partridge, deer, and bear. Drive maybe 45 minutes north and you get into moose country.

I am hoping to buy a lot for retirement. I have already mentioned to my wife, that she would be welcome to come visit me from Ottawa any time when I retire. ;-)

I know the area, did a bit of fishing just off the island... gotta watch out for those rocks!! :p
How are property prices up that way.
On this side of the province, you've gotta go pretty far north to find anything reasonably priced... darned Torontonians ;)

Welcome aboard!

I've been in the valley since a little guy, minus a few years in southern Ontario.
Good hunting everywhere!!

the Valley

Allumettes Island, is about 30 minutes North of Fort Colounge, at the end of the Quebec 148 highway.

Property prices have gone through the roof in the last few years. 12 years ago, you could by a 3 season cottage on the river for about 30,000$. Now a days, .5 to 1 acre river lots are going from 40K to 100K. It does tick a few of the locals off when a property next door sells for twice their assement, and taxes go up. About 8 years ago I missed a nice 10 acre parcel with river frontage and 3 season cottage for 19, 000. So, now a days, I keep my ears open when I am playing euchre with the old folks, in case something comes up.

I am not part of any shooting club. I did spend a year in our reserves when I was 21, and I am comfortable on a range and handling a weapon. I have little time though to go to a range. I work full time in Ottawa, and also have a small farm , that consumes the remainder of my free time.

Welcome to the "nuthouse".
I grew up in Ottawa but moved to Edmonton in `92.
I hunted deer in Renfrew county (near the village of Poland) with my uncle`s party from `86 til `91 on 200 acres of private land that we had exclusive rights to. Ahhhh...those were fun days.
I`m only just getting back into hunting this year even if its only gophers :D
(picked up a new Ruger M77 MkII "target" in .204 with a bushnell elite 3200.

Why don`t you check out the Stevens model 200 bolt actions? They are based on the Savage design.
They sell the .308, 30-06, .243, .270 here new for $329.
Or you can buy the "package" which means it already has mounts, rings, and a scope for about $550 (couldn`t get an acurate figure)
Thats about the least expensive *new* rifle you`ll find.
