I have a ruger 1022 carbine. I picked it up used and I am having problems. Here's the story.....

when I bought the gun I took it out and it ran great. I used a few times since then and it started giving me problems. I would fire a shot and the gun would eject the case and load another round fine but it wasn't resetting the hammer so I would have to pull back the bold half way after every shot to reset the hammer for the next shot. I thought maybe it was gummed up so i completely cleaned the gun paying special attention to the action. and lubed it up again. When I tried it again it let off a few shots with no problem then started doing the same thing again. So then I took it down and cleaned it again and this time trying to use little to no lube in it thinking that the lube was just gritting it up, again I had a few flawless shots but started doing the same thing again, I have tried different ammo types and the problem is the same for all. I did find that when it was working good it always liked american eagle ammo. The last time I took it down at a friends house and we tried cutting a couple loops out of the hammer spring so that the hammer was easier to reset but that only seemed to work for a little while before the problem returned. Could this be a sear issue?? if so how could I tell?? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

I have taken it down as far as pulling the hammer spring out but maybe I will try and take it down all the way. Is this something that is realistic for me to tackle myself? I am fairly good with that kind of stuff but I am definately no gunsmith

I took mine apart a few days ago to install a PC hammer kit, no problems. I'm not that handy or patient. Really shouldn't be a problem for you. Just take it slow and lay out all the parts you remove in chronological order ;)

I'm sure some of the guru's will weigh in soon. Also, RimFireCentral is THE knowledge base for 10/22.

Does it have the factory stock on it? I changed mine to Butler Creek collapsible stock and what happened is the pins that hold the trigger in place don't stay in tight anymore and they come out and it caused a similar thing with teh trigger. Try putting tape over those pins and see if it helps.

that may just be it!!! I'm gonna try that because I left out the fact that since I bought the gun I also put it on a butler creek folding stock. Thanks, I'll keep you all posted, and keep it coming with the good suggestions.

Hmmm....the "hammer spring strut retaining disk"-thingy may be installed upside down. Slot faces into the action, not upright as I recall. This is the most likely source of the hammer reset problem.

No, really. Hit rimfire central and do a search.

I had a similar problem with my 10/22 when I switched to a lighter hammer spring.
The spring did not have enough strength to reset it properly & caused problems. I went back to the stock spring & it works 100% again.
There is also a spring that pushes the trigger forward after firing. If it does not work properly you will have problems also. It is at the back of the trigger .

i tried a spring kit too. it caused intermittent full auto. kinda cool but i didn't know when it was going to happen. put the original springs back in and was all good again.
