howdy- Im glad to be back to this corner of the forum! looking to get back into the m1a game after a looong hiatus. Im wanting a scoped gun that I can play around and work on tightening my offhand groups with- something I can take hunting too. I know it isnt a light platform, and I appreciate that for recoil, but I want the lightest scoped gun I can get.

To make budget I'll start with a shorty 18.5 from Canammo....

budget- $1200ish, well see what reality serves up

Accuracy- 1-2.5 MOA, is this reasonable within budget- and with handloads?
what parts should I look to replace from the get-go?

cheap, light stock without the heavy metal flip up thing and a butpad

Probably bed it myself at some point

Is it worth it to send it in to a "Dr" for a checkup?

Well, Im reading a ton but still dont know where to start. help me out gunnutz- any leads on scopes/mounting options that are light in the 2.5x-8x x 40 range appreciated!

I've always liked the USGI glass stocks for being a minimalist 'carry' rifle, but like you mentioned, the buttplate assembly can get needlessly heavy. I am currently waiting for my "M14Doc" built Norinco black plastic stock that will have an AR15 commercial tube added to the buttstock adapter and then some Magpul Koolaid. I'm hoping that will be a tad lighter for my 18.5" shorty.

I could remove the flash hider (read: no more PING) or take an existing Norc flash hider and cut OFF the front splines/tines and just leave that base with the front sight base and castle nut. Now it would be a super short and handy rifle. Okay, that's my next butcher(ing) job... that knocked off Norc flash suppressor! Hmmmm need a saw for that job and an angle grinder.....

Will get back to you all!

Cheers,
Barney

Oh yeah- theres a good video on the web showing how to knock that flash hider off. Thats definitey gonna happen. I look forward to hearing how your front sight solution works out...
