Hello,

I recently purchased a Charles Daly 601 Tactical. It shot great the first time I shot it. When I disassembled it for cleaning it seems the gas piston is two pieces with two gas rings. It’s broken at the aft gas ring groove. Does anyone have any picture of what the gas piston should look like? I can’t find any parts diagrams specific to the 601 tactical.

Thank You

There are some videos on YT showing cleaning process. Perhaps the ring was damaged during assembly or there was mfg debris inside when you shot it. Always clean 'new' and 'new to me' firearms so you won't be surprised. I bought one for Christmas and found lots of s--- inside, everywhere. Just a 'wipe-down' won't cut it. I've bought 3 'brand-new' guns in the past year and all had s--- inside. A B22 from Lakefield ON and 2 Turks.

I watched every YouTube video I could find on Charles Daly disassembly but none of them had a similar gas piston to
mine. Would you be able to take a picture of your?
Thanks

Hi Daeo - I'll take it apart later today and post pics. Here's a vid of an older Daly - is this like yours ? http s://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbfLihrys3k
I went thru several pages of vids to find lots of diff views.

Pics of Daly 601 Tac Action

Daeo - Here are some pics of the action. Clik to go to Full-size pics. First pic is the piston which has 2 steel rings. Second pic is the inside of the gas port - this only has One O-ring in the foreground of the pic. There seems to be another groove but NO O-ring. Third pic is the assembly But NOT tightened with the nut. Fourth pic is fully tightened assy. I just got this and cleaned it. Haven't been shooting so I'm assuming this is right and won't f-up like yours did - fingers crossed. Like I said, there was a lot of cr-- inside when I cleaned it.

Thanks for the pics. After seeing yours mine is definitely broken in two pieces at the rear gas ring groove. I just got a membership so I could add photos.

Thanks again

WOW! That sure looks like something I'll have to watch for. I've read a lot about this gun on several forums and no-one has mentioned a fail like that. I'll look for more on this, too. Let me know what you hear from Daly's Distrib. Hope they'll send you a new part quick !!

Daeo - Were you running 3" slugs or something ?? I don't plan to but would like to know if you had seriously heavy loads ? I have some Challenger 'Low Recoil' but otherwise just standard 2-3/4 target & field loads in my future.
PS - I posted a query/thread on ShotgunWorld. com about your problem; maybe get some ideas of the issue.

It was the first time i shot the shotgun. I used some challenger 2 3/4” target slug and challenger 2 3/4” #7.5 target load. It functioned flawlessly and I didn’t even notice the issue till I disassembled for cleaning. I shot about 15 rounds of each. I emailed for warranty work but I hope they just send a new gas piston.

It's good you already contacted them, but I'd be sure to point out that you just want a new part, not repair. Or else you may be w/o a gun for months.

This is mine. About 500 rnds of skeet loads thru it and nearly a flat of 3" #4 steel and 75 rnds of 3" 1.25oz #5 shot. Not awhole lot of shooting but its been flawless

That looks different than mine. I have two gas ring groove and two gas rings. I have a new gas piston being shipped to me right now. Although it’s frustrating that it broke the customer service and warranty has been great! Thanks everyone for the help and pictures.

Brybenn , Is that a Daly 601 Tac ?? It looks Wayyy diff from mine and Daeo's (see pics ). Maybe built by some other than Merak ?
