Hey there!

I want to get myself a new firearm and am going to get into precision shooting. I want to get myself a .308 and looking for your knowledge to get me in the right direction. Im looking into the following models let me know what you guys think.

Remington 700 R5
Remington 700p

Or savage 10fcp. I like that it has the accutrigger and accustock. Seems like a nice rifle for the price.

I was doing searching on the forum and saw that other Remington 700 seem good but I also read that 700 varmint models aren't as accurate out the box compared to 700p or R5 models is this true? I'm basically looking for the best bang for my buck. Something that has great accuracy for around 1000$.

Thanks!:D

I own a 10fcp and it shoots really well. same hole at 100 yards with 43.5 gr of varget behind a 168 grain berger. I havnt taken it out further yet. But i think it is a great gun.. The 5r was on my list aswell when i was shopping.. General consensus is the 5r rifling will give you good accuracy with any weight bullet and will prob foul less.. Theres one currently on the ee for 950 shipped..

So the Savage is just as good of a contender then the 700 R5?

Chevy vs Ford cou: but we all know Chevy wins.

I just bought a 5r. I was looking for a Savage when I bought it, go figure.
I've been loading for another 5r for over a year and the gun has more than proven itself. I've also got another Rem 700 and lots of extra goodies, so it made sense.

I will buy the Savage soon.

what do you mean by "getting into precision shooting"?

what factory gun you buy makes no difference, some are hummers most shoot ok, and some are dogs in every make. the gun is only a small part of the package. you need top quality glass and you need to learn reloading.

of the people that take the sport seriously, 95% are using either a remington or a custom action. never cared for the savage action or trigger myself but its your dime.

I have a Savage 12 BVSS in .223 that shoots great. I just got it glass bedded and installed a better scope so I am expecting even better results. I also have a Rem 5R that I just got set up and have not shot. I did buy the rem used from a friend and he says it is a shooter. Cheers Roscoe

Both good contenders To strart with. But I am a savage fan and own the FCP-K and love it. Rem has a lot to offer for after market parts. But savage makes up for it with our of the box features and shooting accuracy. Little more pricey at times though.

Theres also a 10fp that just popped up on the EE for $950 comes ready to go for a first time shooter... All you need is ammo and trigger time and it should be a good intro rifle to get you started...

Isn't the SPS stand for "special purpose synthetic" ? Apparently the SPS is just a cheaper version (without the HS stock) of the 700P models. Remington has way to many models. It confuses people like me...

Yeah, but it's also one of the most affordable Rem 700 actions, along with the short (20") heavy barrel, throwing on a AICS stock truly free floats the barrel, with the SPS stock it's not completely free floating.

Then again that's just what works for me, I gotta be honest though I absolutely love the AICS stocks, you feel the build quality everytime you pick one up
