Hey guys ive got a bit of a decision to make here... and have some trouble doing it!

Im looking to build a multi use tactical/precision... hunting/paper punching rifle that I can use for whatever the job is.

Im also on a budget! Im starting off with a base rifle and going from there.

Now im pretty sure ive decided on the Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308 but I was also interested in the 700 5R Milspec but im honestly not sure if spending the extra money on that rifle is worth it as I could put that towards glass and other goodies.

I know the major downfall of the SPS Tac is the stock which could easily be changed out for an HS precision take off and still be under the cost of the base 5R.

After all that is said and done im going to be moving on to optics/rings/base.

Im not set on a base or rings yet but im pretty certain im going to pick up a Vortex Viper to start me off.

I guess thats more than one thing im having troubles with choosing but the question more or less boils down to is it worth the extra cash for me to get a 5R Milspec or a 700P over the SPS Tac?

Any and all input is appreciated! really interested to hear what you guys would recommend for base/ring/scope for a guy on a budget. Im not trying to build a show stopper im just trying to build something im going to really enjoy shooting and fill all the roles im going to use it for.

I have a nice Remington 700 VSF .308 with HS percision stock for sale it will be up in the EE in a few days.

Asking $800 shipped I also have a nearly new Vortex Viper 3.5-10x50 BDC for $400

Have you looked at the 700 SPS Varmint? I don't know this for a fact but it's probably the same as the Tactical except for a different stock (which you want to change anyway) and a longer barrel, which I would think to be better. I have one and really like it. It was a bit of a pain on a mountain elk hunt though.
As for glass I'm not sure what money you're looking to spend but I would strongly recommend looking into the Zeiss Conquest line. The bang for the buck factor is very high there and I don't see you having to upgrade any time soon. I have a 3.5-10x44 with the mildot reticle, not sure if its still available. AWESOME scope.
Good luck.

I have the SPS Tactical in .308 and yes the stock is not so great but it'll do. To answer your question...it'll do what you're looking to accomplish. The more expensive models you've listed will also do it but if you're paper punching you'll be limited to a couple hundred metres anyhow (so why spend great gobs of dough). As for optics I went with the Falcon Menace line. I find the scope to be pretty good for the money. I think Frontier (sponsor) sells them...

5R in 223. I love the stainless action and barrel, the finish is nicer, the stock has an integral bedding system. The down side is it is not tacticool black.

Failing that, an SPS varmint or tactical.

Like what Obtunded said... I've got the R700 SS 5R in .308 and love it. Accurate, easy to clean and overall a great rifle. I liked it so much that my wife has bought me the .223 version for Christmas, now I'm just praying that Canada Post will get it here on time.

I concur, a 700 SPS Tac is the way to go. Find a LTR take-off stock on the exchange and you've got near perfection for a factory type offering. You'll basically have a LTR without having to pay a LTR premium price.

I'll be putting my SPS-T into an MDT Tac21 chassis.

If you want to reload for this rifle, PM me for a recipe. The short barrel requires certain powders to avoid fouling quickly.

Don't change out the stock just yet!

Try a brownelles acra-glass gel kit first (they are like $30)

I have done 2 SPS Tacs with this. I like the feel of the Houge stock but the 'flimseyness' is kind of off putting.

You are going to want to bed any stock you wind up with any way, so bed the entire barrel channel at the same time. Prep it and then pack it with lead bullets (for weight) and some tungsten or stainless rods (for strength & to take the flex to a minimum).

The end result is a stock that is as solid as an HS, rubbery & grippy of the houge and 'tacti-cool' black.

All for less that $50 and a few hours of your time....... And now you will have a bunch of $$ to spend on glass, and you can always upgrade later if it's not what you want.

Here are a few pics of what it looks like, this is a SPS DM stock but its the same as the houge, only I added more lead to the houge stocks.

My $.02

Cheers!

Thanks for that idea! Its worth a shot for sure.

I dont plan on changing out the stock until ive got glass on her and ive put some rounds down range. I want to shoot it in its stock form for as long as possible until I decide on what I really need and what will suit me best instead of blowing a bunch of money I may regret spending later.

If you can afford a 5r buy it. It is a better rifle and is worth the price difference. Even if you buy a used 5r over a new sps you are still ending up with a better rifle.

Already got myself the SPS Tactical. I compared both side by side at the shop and the fit and finish on the 5R is very nice but to me the extra cost wasnt really worth it as the whole goal is a budget multi purpose rifle. Eventually once the factory barrel is shot out I will throw on a nice aftermarket one and upgrade as I need to.

Right now im just focusing on getting some glass on her and shooting it! Im happy with my choice and I know its going to be loads of fun down the road :D I will update with some pictures once everything is together and let you all know how it is once she hits the range for the first time.

You might as well invest in some good quality glass because you're not going to shoot out that barrel for many, many years to come. So, you won't have to worry about having funds available for that anytime soon. You'll grow bored with the rifle in it's current configuration long before the barrel goes south on you.

Yeah im hoping to get one of the new Sightron SIII's for this rig. Going to hopefully have some glass on her for the end of Jan. see what I can come up with and go from there.

I will buy the best glass my wallet lets me! Oh and the wife ;):p

Next step thus far is choosing some glass to top her off.

Im really not sure what my budget will be for glass at this point but I know for a fact I dont want to break the $1000 mark.

I need something thats going to give me a good range of magnification so it can be used for both paper punching and hunting! I need something thats not going to be a fragile aswell as waterproof/fogproof for those nasty days of hunting. I live on the "Wet" coast so it needs to be able to handle that.

So far ive considered a few of the Falcon Menace and Vortex Viper scopes aswell as some of the new Sightrons for the higher end of my budget.

I know Bushnell has some good scopes in that range aswell that will work well for hunting with the rainguard coating that they have.

The scope needs to have target style turrets and hopefully something from the 4-6 minimum magnification up to about 20-25 dont think im really going to need anything more than that.
