Fellows,

I've got an Isreali converted 7.62mm mauser K98K that I've got a problem with. The gap between the extractor and bolt face is too narrow to properly fit the rims on brass, and so loaded rounds are not picked up by the bolt -they instead pop up and are basically push-fed into the chamber. Also, the bolt is very hard to close for the last half inch or so, as the extractor is apparently being forced over the end of the round on closing - not what it was meant to do.

Anyways, I was wanting to dissasemble the bold and sand/dremel the inside of the extractor to give a little more space between it and the bolt face, but damn if I can get the extractor off the bold body. I've checked surplusrifles.com, as I usually do for dissasebling, but for some reason their bolt dissasembly doesn't work for me as the bolt in their pics is able to rotate the extractor around way further than mine can.

Anyways, does anyone know how to get the extractor off a K98K bolt body on these Israeli rifles?

Go to the following page

Pay particular attention to figures 8 and 9 along with the descriptions. Basically, you have to rotate the extractor so the little foot on the extractor is out of the groove in the bolt. Once it's rotated far enough, push the extractor toward the front of the bolt-sometimes a gentle tap with a soft mallet is needed to drive the extractor forward.

Do not remove the extractor collar unless absolutely necessary. They are very easy to bugger up.

Warning. Re-assembly can be challenging:)

Mauser98 - just got it off - THANKS! I kind of thought this might be what I needed to do, but didn't want to start putting any significant pressure on parts without knowing what I was doing!
