HELP! Extractor on SuperMatch m14

I have a m-14 supermatch and it packed up the chicken today. just had all the wear parts on my trigger replaced as the trigger pin was cracked and causing the odd sticky trigger. Waited a month for parts from springfield and get to the range and after 10 rounds and my extractor blew up.

Is this a common issue with these bolts? The extractor sheared off at the hinge pin and all the bolt parts fell out. I'm wondering if this bolt needs a gunsmith or can a guy that can fix most gun problems fix this? Or do I have to send the bolt to springfeild?

I'm shooting 45gr of 4320 and 155 PM's through the gun, hardly a hot load and I've shot probably 800 rounds through this gun (this mix too) and the gun was previously owned. Could the action possibly be getting too much gas which is hammering the action too hard on cycle causing these parts failures or is it just the sign of a worn gun?

Any direction would be appreciated....

Expecting help in 4 hours, in the middle of the night is kind of pushing it, don't you think?

I've read that the cast Sproingfield bolts are prone to this sort of problem. Replacing the bolt with a Norinco should solve your problems.

Yup, the cast Springfield Inc. extractors are infamous for breaking. Replacing with either a USGI M14 or M1 Garand extractor is the fix. As stated, Norinco bolts/extractors are good too

I see. It was my understanding that the extractors themselves were not the fault. It was the bolt that was breaking the extractors, even good extractors.

Hungry and Laz2000 are they guys that would really know the answers here.

I talked with springfield armory and since it is a supermatch they want it back on warranty to hand refit a new bolt to it. they say that replacing with a bolt that doesn't get their care will be a deg. to accuracy. Just really nervous about shipping a gun over the border. So I talked with wolverine and asked them if they would ship it for me (due to the fact they have import/export perpermints) and they say "yeah!" The last thing I want to have happen is have my gun disappear into the customs quagmire.

yes. help in the middle of the night is a bit much. BUT I'M DESPERATE!

Well, you got it. Good on Wolverine, and say good-bye to your rifle for a year.

I hear that Sproingfield is pretty slow with warrantee work.

In talking with springfield and wolverine about just replacing the bolt with a USGI bolt or NORINCO (they didn't much like that idea) although this will keep the rifle functional they said accuracy from the supermatch will suffer, guaranteed this as well as all the supermatches are handfit. The warranty work will include this rifle having a new handfit bolt put into it..... can't argue with that one...... :wimper:.

Just bite the bullet and get a USGI extractor. That's what our American cousins do all the time. Check the numerous M1A/M14 boards in the US for this problem as well. It will fix your problem for good and you don't have to do without your M1A for a long time. Replacing the extractor is not a big deal  Check if someone on this board has one for sale.
