Hello,

I'm new to the forum and was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions for me (ps. I used the search function for most of these and have been reading pages and pages of old posts for about a 2 days now, still no answers)

1) I just ordered an SKS from S.I.R. (there backordered currently but say there getting more in early Jan. 2008) When I get it, how can I tell what kind of SKS it is? (eg. is it an SKS-D etc. ) Are the odds good that the one ill get from SIR will accepts aftermarket detachable mags?

2) How do these mags work? obviously some type of maintenance has to be done to the factory mag - do you just drop them in or what? And with that, where are some good links for places i can buy pinned mags? pref. 5/20

Thanks for the help.

You will not be getting an SKS-D. If you were it would be listed as an SKS-D and not as an SKS. You'll be getting the regular Chinese SKS with a 5 round fixed mag. You load them from the top like a hunting rifle a round at a time or with stripper clips.

There are after market mags avalible for regular SKS carbines but they are not supposed to be the best in the reliability department. These are the so called "duck bill" mags. The SKS-D takes standard AK47 type mags.
