I took my girlfriend to the trap / skeet range today. It was her first time out and she never shot a gun before. I have a Benelli Super Black Eagle II with the recoil reducing stock. It really does not kick hard at all. I had light 1 1/8 Oz traploads.

I shot a few first (and missed, of course!) and then showed her how to hold it and let her have a go. She had a bit of trouble and was very afraid of the gun. She shot a few but did not like the kick and the BOOM!
She had it shouldered pretty good and said it did not hurt but she had a hell of a flinch.

What is the best way of introducing your girlfriend to shooting shotgun??
Anybody got any advice?

Maybe I'll get her to shoot a 22 for a few times?

She did very well for a first timer and I bet she would like it eventually.

I think she figured she would be Annie Oakley right off the bat!

FYI She is 5'7 and very strong, athletic and fit.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

starting out

First, most of the ladies that I have coached, in trap need a shorter stock.
It is hard to get the gun in the right place on the shoulder with a stock that is too long. I have a older Urika that has been shorten and has three stock shims. I keep it for small framed shooters.
Switch to 1oz loads for less recoil. Cheaper than buying a 20 ga.
If it is trap, set the machine to throw only straight aways, and start her on station #3. This giver her the chance to learn where she has to be to break a consitant target. When she is breaking a few, set the machine back to normal.
A good vest with a recoil pad in the shoulder helps.
Try to find a club with a few other women trap shooters.
If you sell her on it and want to buy her a gun buy something with some recoil managment in it. An Auto is a good choice.
good luck
My wife tried it a few times but never to to shooting. I never really pushed it
My shooting is my time. Although I am married to a great gal, every couple needs some space.

FIRST you start them with a .22, then something bigger, than something bigger, THAN something bigger still .... Hell even I didn't fire a 12 guage for YEARS after I started shooting (again) and owning firearms .... Them 12 guages friggin' HURT, which is the LAST thing you want for a newbie in training ...

I started out my girlfriend with a .22 for the first couple of days. Then a 30 carbine for a couple of shots, then a .410 for a couple, and a .22-250 twice. A couple of weeks after that a couple of friends and I were shooting clays and she wanted to try. She hit her first two clays. First time shooting a 12 gauge. And then she hit a couple but she would have done better but after hitting her first two in a row we thought she could shoot with the boys.

Yeah post a picture or two of her... it'll help us pick the gun/caliber that's best suited for her :)

Like Kenny said though, shooting time is my time (away from the woman)... maybe you should take this as a good thing :p

A gas semi would be a better way to go than an inertia driven gun like the SBE II (I have one as well) if you can get your hands on a Remington 1100 and if it fits her that might be a better 12 gauge to use.

Though the advice others have given is worth listening to start out small and work up to the 12 gauge and use some light 7/8 oz loads when you do get to the 12 gauge.

just get some light loads for your SBE, if you're shooting singles or hand trap for basic training you don't have to worry about it fully cycling the 2nd round

my experience with girls to their first intro to shooting is:

- they want to have fun. if they cannot hit anything in the first 10 mins, it's not fun and they get bored and wanna go home.
- they dont want to get hurted or bruises on any part of their body, because it does not get them any prettier.
- some low recoil, cool looking guns, like modern looking black pistols, M4s, etc.

big time x2. Started by GF on a Savage Mk IIFV and one of those big stick on tgts that 'illuminate' when hit. I mounted it and wrote down what she was shooting with and she still has it up on the inside of our front door:rolleyes:
I just bought her a 10/22 charger cause she thought it looked "cool" and different. She hates my 12" 870 tho and if I didn't make here shot a 5 rd famil ea rng day, usually fm the hip, she would be perfectly content to sit on one of the .22's or one of the SIGs and blast away all day (and she kills me on pistol too!:runaway:)

Oh, and girls hate COLD so bring TONNES of cold gear if you make them come hunting or rng shooting in the winter months!
