I've finally taken possesion of Grand Dad's 45-90. I'm hoping some of you fellas on here can share some details on this firearm. According to some websites it has the heavy version of the octogon barrel. The barrel is 26" long. Serial number is 18###.

Here's the pictures thanks to Nessy's help:

I'd really like to get it in shooting condition, depending on it's value. Also, can anyone identify the REALLY small .22's on the left of the last photo? I've never seen such a small bullet before. They're marked with a "D" on the rear of the case.

Yours is def. an antique... a very early '86...rifles from this time frame draw over 5000$ if in very good shape.......yours would be considered a shooter and def. worth fixing up and using.......stocks can be ordered that are 98% fit, loads should be light smokeless or Black Powder, as gun was made before smokeless was discovered. Brass avail. from Raynor Shine in Canada, soft(30-1) cast bullets avail. from M.T. Chambers. Enjoy that wonderful old rifle.

Ben, do you have a contact or website for the replacement stocks? For that matter any other useful website I should know about regarding this rifle?

I'm extemely proud to have been given this piece of history, I can only imagine the things it's "seen" and been through. Shooting it will be a memorable experience.

The people I have dealt with are: Treebone Carving...they are a U.S. outfit but they know how to fashion beautiful wood for Winchesters.

There are a couple of books and a stock on ebay right now :D
Provenance can increase the value also.
Nice rifle good luck with the project, glad you are gonna be shooting it, Grandad knew who to give the rifle to.
Cheers nessy.
