Appears to be either a M96 or M38 Small Ring Mauser. It has the stepped barrel and what appears to be the original military site (I am no expert what so ever).

Carl Gustof, Husqvarna and Mauser's plant in Oberndorf Germany manufactured these rifles (but apparently out of swedish steel as it is said to be the best). I can't tell you by looking at it if its a M96 or M38 as the bolt has been modified, the barrel appears to have been cut and the markings are covered.

There are alot of people on this site that can help you with more information, and anyone will tell you that these old girls are awesome to shoot and keep up with most of the more modern quarter bores (although slightly larger than .25, actually.264 I believe).

Google Swedish Mauser and you will find all sorts of good articles, there are a few from Chuck Hawks and other writers as well.

Bolt off your scope and front mount and the date of manufacture should be there.

I will say that I have a 42 mm scope on mine with low rings and it clears, but if you like the see throughs, than don't worry about it, but I would definetly prefer something else.

Hope all that helps.
