Hey Guys.
Came across some military ammo and would like some info. It is head stamped 5.56 FNB 84. It is a FMJ bullet with a painted green tip and a black ink band around where the case is crimped onto the bullet cannelure.
Is this specialty ammo? Ie tracer or armour piercing? Any insights would be appreciated. Many thanks,

P7

Not armor piercing!

Regular ball ammo is plain with no paint.
Armor piercing ammo is black tipped.
M855/SS109 is green tipped because it as a hybrid ball with steel penetrator.

Thanks, so is hybrid with steel penetrator designed for thin plate penetration? Ie., less than 1/4" plate @ 100 yards? Or is it more for vehicle and soft body armour penetration? Bullet weight is 62 grains?

FNB is Fabrique Nationale, from Belgium. The green tip M855/SS109 is just marked to differentiate it from old standard M193 ball ammo, not to identify any penetrative properties.

NATO 5.56mm ammo is painted with a green tip (SS109 or M855), only if the country had previously used 5.56mm ammo of another style. (M193)

So Canada, although we previously produced M193 for the US, never used any.
Hence the C77 (NATO SS109 equivalent) is new and does not need to be distinguished by painting the tip green.

The US paints M855 tips green to distinguish from M193.

Like Johnny said.

Interesting point, I never thought about that. I would also think that any country that also produced for export would mark their SS109 and M855 production.
