Hey guys I got a old Rifle from my grandfather and I don't know what it is.
looks like a .22 but .22LR does not fit. Looks to be a smooth bore.
Any help would be great. Here are some pic's
Exactly what I was going to ask. If 22lr fits, but won't go all the way in...there is a solid chance it's chambered for 22 short, or 22 long. Possibly something even shorter in length than 22 short.
Do an Images search for the term "Flobert Rifle" and see what looks familiar there. They were inexpensive, European made, and they were not often well taken care of.
Did exactly that and came up with this picture from an old Sears and Roebuck catalog, which expresses their feelings about them....
Cheers

Likely a Flobert of some kind, possibly a 9mm Flobert. You can get the 9mm Flobert shot shells from Canada ammo and Tradex. It could be a .25 Stevens as well but not sure if they ever made .25 Stevens Shot Shells.
Thanks for all the help guys.

Thank you for the info that's got to be what it is. I found some bb caps in the box of ammo I got from him as well.
If it's a smoothbore and has any rust in it presently then I'd guess that the round BB will roll and spin in a nasty manner as it hooks on things running down the barrel. They were likely not that accurate to begin with and with time and corrosion won't be any better. I'd suggest it's worth more as a wall hanger and the ammo worth more to cartridge collectors than it is as a usable firearm at this point. I'd clean it and preserve it with that museum wax, hang it in the den or family room and call it a day.
It does have that French flair for style though. Love the shape of the stock and that combo trigger guard and back block lever.
