Got this 7" barrel that I thought I could put on my Smith and Wesson Model 41. I can physically mount it on my Model 41, but I find that it has slightly different dimensions to the existing 5.5" barrel. It's about 3/16" narrower and the length of cantilever from the chamber face is ~3/8" shorter. Have attached some pics below.

From what I have seen, the 7" and the 5.5" barrels for the Model 41 should just be swappable. I don't think there are slides fitted/matched to each barrel. Question is, what Smith and Wesson model is this for? If I can track one down, may be a good addition to my collection. Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the tip Form4473. It looks indeed to be a barrel for a Model 46. I found some pic's of a Model 46, and it looks like the rear sight extends beyond the end of the cantilever to be flush with the rear of the slide. And also looks like the Model 46 slide is wider than the stock Model 46 barrel. Doing some research now, but looks like a Model 46 barrel with matching Model 46 slide can be put on a Model 41 frame. So I guess I'll look around for a Model 46 slide (going to be tough to find), or maybe look at modifying an extra Model 41 slide I have, or see if I can buy a Model 46 to add to my collection. I guess I could always send it back to the dealer who sold it to me as a Model 41 barrel - but that's not as much fun ;)

Update. Got some additional info from some really knowledgeable resources like hotrod1984s10. Looks like I may actually have a 1970's era Model 41 barrel afterall. Here is a snippet of from our email exchanges:

Note that the front of the barrel has 2 grooves milled into the side of the barrel starting at the muzzle, one groove on each side. These are for the Olympic Weight sets that were discontinued in around the mid 70’s. So, based on the fact that S&W discontinued the weights in the mid 70’s and eliminated machining those rails for the weights in the late 70’s, your barrel dates from sometime after the “lazy & was eliminated and the late 70’s when the grooves for the rails were eliminated.

So the mystery for me still is why is this barrel so much narrower than my other Model 41 barrels and slides. This barrel measures .700" wide and my Model 41 slides are .850" wide. Just looks odd. Hotrod1984s10 suggested a S&W specific forum, so I will do some more research there.

btw - the distributor that I bought this from was Elwood Epps and they have offered to take this barrel back with a full refund including shipping costs. My first dealings with them, and really nice to know they are a great standup retailer. I will definitely purchase from them again. I am having a lot of fun researching this barrel though, so not going to send it back to them. Going to keep researching this and until I can either figure out how to use it, or see it go to a good home. I just hate the thought of a nice old machined piece just wasting away on someones stock shelf.

Posting some fresh pics. I lightened the pics a bit to show more detail. It's actually a nice dark bluing. Shiny on the sides and a matt finish on the top.
