Help identifying Grandad's service rifle?

I'm sorry for the really poor photos but it's all I have to go on. My grandfather passed recently, and these photos surfaced from a long lost trunk. They were taken around 44-45, as the story goes. He was enlisted and in training when WWII ended, here in southern Ontario. Unfortunately I have no other information and I don't know squat about uniforms or other identifiers to which branch he was training for. I'm hoping to learn what type of rifle Grandad was using here, and any other information you all might know.
