From what I can tell its an extremely bubba'd M1917 in a Swedish Mauser stock. What interests me is the scope mounting system. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

That is an old style mount. I had a Remington Mod 30 with a similar mount that had been hand made by Les Viel of Vernon. He stamped his name into the front mount.

It's a good solid mount and should serve you well.

The mount on your rifle looks like it was adapted from a commercial unit.

It may be a bubba job but I've seen a lot worse and that one looks solid enough to do the job.

Just one other thing for you to look at. That leather sling looks like it might be an original 1907. If it is, there is likely a manufacturers mark and date near one of the ends. It could be quite valuable.

I agree I have an original on my P17 Remington. Mine is a Hoyt.

I believe the rope is cosmetic, to fill the hole in the hand guard and hide the spot where the rear sight was removed from the barrel.

Unless the barrel was replaced, there never was a rear sight mounted. But I would agree it would cosmetically fill the gap between the action and hanguard.

###y scope mount. Can't get much damn lower than that for sure!

As I said, check out that sling, first, before doing anything else.

The rear sight protector ears were very nicely/professionally milled from the rear receiver bridge. Likely the original stock was broken and the Swede stepped up for duty. If it shoots well enough to suit your needs, leave it as is. Boyd's sells sporter stocks for those.

If it were mine, I would be inclined to bed the receiver, just in case, to prevent any splitting at an inappropriate time.

Ah, I am not familiar with the P17, I have a swede with the rear sight removed and a gap in the hand guard like the above pic. (a PO put a peep sight on the receiver).
