I have a scope which is mounted on an FN top cover. It is a Dr. Wohler Kassel 2 x 17 and also marked telescope No 78 MK1 99-960-6970 2943/65 does anyone know what I've got or can tell me anything about it?

Thanks in advance,

John

I am going to go out on a limb and suggest this is not for a rifle but rather for a rocket launcher, recoilless rifle, type weapon, possibly a mortar etc.

Pretty sure its for the Carl Gustav 84 mm anti-tank recoilless rifle.

You will have two problems. The eye relief is set for a shoulder controlled 84mm (or 330 calibre and no decimal places) recoilless rifle. For personal experience, the shock of the backblast is more physically impressive than the felt recoil. Besides, there is rubber eyepiece that is missing on yours that makes up the stand-off distance needed to prevent scope bite. The other problem is probably something a bucket of shims in the rings can overcome. As I recall, there isn't much internal adjustment. Most of the adjusting is done with a big ratchet knob for elevation, and use of the graticule for windage.

I had a half dozen or so of these 10 plus years ago from a government surplus sale; they were like new. As mentioned the eye relief is too short for anything but .223 or .22LR or some similar round with no recoil.

Quality scope with a very wide field of view but the reticule is not much good for a rifle, though it is useable.

I assume our troops got some better optic for the CG as they didn't get rid of them.
