Help identifying Winchester 1886

Looking to identify a Winchester 1886 45-70 rifle for a friend of mine.

Serial number lists it as a 1908 year of manufacture. I believe its a sporting rifle? However the short magazine tuber is making me second guess as to what the value might be.

You folks have any idea what something like this might be worth?

How long is the barrel?

Looks like a 2/3 rds magazine tube. Straight stock is nice, but that's been left in a dank dark rusty basement!
But that would make a nice shooter if the barrel isn't rotted out.

That’s a 1/2 magazine Dale. 2/3 come out a far bit more. Have had several Winchesters with 2/3 as well as 3/4 mags. The one that the nose cap just barely protrudes is a button mag. Have an 1886 ELW 45-70 now with a 3/4 mag.
If the barrel is the standard 26 inches and not tapered, then it’s would be a standard round barrel sporting rifle with half magazine. The gun is too late to letter with Cody. Yes, a bit rough, but if they bore is ok, make a great hunting rifle. It lighter with the shorter magtube.

Love to have this 1886 as this is the only condition lever I could afford, as all my money is tyed up in high end bolt rimfires for the most part!
Seen a similar 45/70, Wich was made for CN railroad a few years back, it handled beautiful! Even had the rear but inletted CNR rear stock factory!!! This gun reminds me of it.

Thanks guys. He's telling me the barrel is 25 1/4" long ( I don't have the rifle with me). I suspect hes probably measuring a incorrectly as 26" makes sense.

The photos make it a bit difficult to put a price on it, is that flaking or rust on the barrel?
