What do you look for in a varmint scope.
It will go on a .204 ruger varmint gun.

I am thinking a leupold in around 4 x 14.

Is the AO a must?

Does the varmint style reticle with elevation lines really help? I use a rangefinder.

thanks

I have a vxIII 4.5-14x40 Boone and crockett reticle on my 204 and it works pretty good, on my 223 I have a VXL 6.5-20x56LR (side focus) with the varmint reticle and it is great. If I upgrade the 204 it will get a VXIII 4.5-14x40LR with the varmint reticle. The side focus is an excellent feature. I find 6.5 has a narrow field of view making it hard to find the little buggers at closer ranges, hence the 4.5 on the 204.

I think an adjustable objective would suit you better for placing shots out to 300-400 yards. 4.5-14 would be just fine. I have one on a 300 WM and have used it out to 600 and 800 yards. Man sized target but I could still make out the marker.
