Ok,
So I made the move out to Alberta from Ontario and I want to get into long distance shooting.

I was wondering if there are any nutters out there that would be willing to give me a hand?
I have no idea what club to join, or what rifle to get and so on... I'm kinda hoping someone one will be kind enough to get me started and show me the basics once I get my gear.
Is there anything else I should know about what i need to get or are there different types of distance shooting?
I'm looking to go out and have fun and maybe if im good get into shooting comps. ( A Looooooooooooooooooooooooooong way ) away.
Also don't hate.... I am a fan of the Rem 700
Thanks guys.

Jon

Oh... It would be cool if the club did restricted activities as well, I want to shoot restricted outside but that comes second to the distance shooting, I will join up a restricted club else where if need be.

Well, There is Sherwood Park Fish & Game.... the have a range near cooking lake.... and you could look into the Canadian Historical Arms Society.

Glad to have another 'nutter in the Park... Welcome to my home town!

It is a bit of a hike for you, but the Alberta PRA has a fantastic long range just west of calgary, and southwest of Cochrane. This is the provincial mecca for long range shooting, and they also have clinics for getting involved in F-Class shooting, which is a sport using a rifle like yours with a scope and a bipod, and shooting between 300 and 900 meters.

If you root around on here, "Inspector" is from Leduc. He is a guru in F-Class and the APRA.

There are a fantastic bunch of guys in Alberta.

Also, when you actually come out and try one of these matches, you will see that 90% of the rifles used will have Remington actions. That is the difference between actually being involved, and sitting on a keyboard and pointlessly trashing other brands.

Although I am from BC, I shoot in Alberta a couple of times a year. Fantastic people and a great facilty.

Well Jon, first up do you have your PAL or RPAL and then next question is do you have a Alberta Hunter Ed card? You can take that here http://www.aheia.com/Main

There are a number of groups who shoot long range around the province. The reason I suggest getting the above is we shoot out in the toolies as well, hence the AH card. This card lets you get a Wildlife certificate. This lets you hunt coyote/shoot on crown land.
As far as kit goes you can get a custom build on a 700 action or you could buy a prebuilt Savage model 12. There are many options. See precision rifle section.
Next I would join SP fish & game. Well that gives you something to ponder.

Sherwood Park F&G is a great association to join (30 min E of Sh Pk). The membership cost is very reasonable. I have been with them for quite a while. As for choosing a new precision firearm? A 22 rimfire is a good place to start. Ammunition is cheap, and the rifles won't break your wallet. Centerfire rifles, well, your choices are almost endless if you have the money. As for help getting set up, no problem, many of us out at the range are friendly and will help a guy out. I will gladly assist you if you like. I help lot's of range newcomers get settled in. I am away today until April 24th so I may not reply to a PM or this post until next week (if need be).

The Sherwood Park Game and Fish range is the obvious one to join. It is very well maintained, and has distances up to 300 meters. There are some F-Class shooters there, but no formal competition at the range that I am aware of. Get to know Jim, the range master. He's a great guy and will help you. The range is well disciplined, so learn and respect the rules.

There is a range in Spruce Grove, but I can't recommend it - not well maintained and would be a longer drive for you. 300 meters max also.

There used to be a 1000 yard range at Genesee, but it has run into some safety and approval issues. Do a search here for Genesee and you should find lots of opinions. I have not been tempted to try the place. When I go down range I want to know for sure that things are totally controlled at the firing line. Draw your own conclusion.

The fastest/cheapest way into long range is to get a Savage 12 F Class or other Savage true target gun. A 6BR in 8 twist would be a good choice to start with. If you learn to shoot well you will give a run to some of those guys that shoot the mega buck customs.

Poke around the site below to get some background on long range shooting and competitions.

Savage Accuracy

There still is a range at Genesee, it hasn't left. They are just working through re-approval for the longer range stuff.

Sherwood Park is just as "uncontrolled" as Genesse if you are the only shooter there.

Safety comes down to the individual.

Quit with the innuendo/#### measuring that SPFG is better than Genesee, or vice versa. They are both good ranges and the OP will do fine picking any of them.

Maybe if the area ranges all got together and onto the same page without this us versus them bull####, they could present a common front to onerous changes the CFO might want to make.

Hi , Thanks guys... I have both my RPAL and PAL, but no Alberta Hunter Ed Card. Will my Ontario Licences transfer over?

Jeeze Bullwhip, you hit the nail right on the head. I think, from what I've heard, that if the ranges did actually get together and approach the cfo, they might be able to do something. Oh ya, remember WildRose, everyone, check out our policy page.

Well I can't say for sure that it would work this way for everyone but a good friend moved of mine moved here from Cornwall, and we went into my local shop got him a win card, showed the shop owner his Ontario hunting licence and he called the CO's and ask them to change his status to eligible to hunt as a resident, it should be realitivly that easy

I'm sorry, but the OP asked a question and I'm giving him advice based on personal experience with the Spruce Grove and Sherwood Park range. There is no comparison. The Spruce Grove range was very poorly maintained, and I ended my membership there because of it. When I belonged you had to take your own hammer, nails, and lumber to build a stand to put your targets on. The Sherwood park range is very well maintained, and I am extremely impressed with the safety provisions.

And as I said, I can't comment on Genesee based on personal experience, but if you do a search here, you will find that there have been issues, and the OP can form their own opinion.

You are entitled to your opinion that all the ranges are the same, but that certainly has not been my experience.

Ok, so today I took the day to check out some of the local clubs.... and I must say The Sherwood Park Fish and Game Club is very nice. I grabbed a application as well as a monthly news letter and read thru it.
This may not be the area to ask but is there a course i have to take to get my ATT transfered to the club?

for what i heard, genesee 800M is closed. anyone can comfirm ? ??

i'm shooting at sherwood and so far, i love it.
not too much wind, 100-200-300m, nice concrete tables. good place to test my loaads and get practice all summer.

Welcome I live right out by the range and am willing to lend a hand if need be. Have you thought about what rifle your going to buy yet? Also do you reload? Ron
