Hi I have a No.4 but it's stamped as follows No.4 MK1/2(f)FTR and the serial number is 49Y###x the bolt matches England is stamped on the end of the reciever and there is a J stamped on the left side of the barrel and there is no dates anywhere I was hoping someone could help me with indenifying the manufacture and roughly the age. Thanks

Pictures would help

It is a No4mk1 that went through factory thorough repair to bring it to the Mk2 standards. (trigger hung on receiver, stock modified for new trigger arrangement, or if warped, replaced with a new one) Hence the Mk1/2.
FTR means factory thorough repair.
(F) means the repair was done at fazakerley (it could also be the original manufacturer mark as well).
There should be a date stamped near the model number or the FTR. Perhaps below it. Or it could be on the wrist.
I've yet to see a serial number like yours. I'll let smellie or someone else comment on that.

Again pictures would help

Ok thanks I'll up load pics when I get to a pc I'm on my iPhone I totally disassembled the rifle and there is no date stamped anywhere I took it on trade for partial payment on a motor job on a sled lol I want to scope it and putting it in a monte Carlo stock for deer hunting as the fore stock is already butchered and it's lighter than my 300 savage

Look for a no gun smith style. I can't remember the manufacturers off the top of my head, but look for one that mounts to the ejector and safety screw.

Has the metal been butchered. IE are there still bayonet lugs? If so, you can always restore her to her former glory.

Ya the the lugs and front sight are still there the sight guard is gone the rear stock appears to be unaltered and still has the brass butt plate

The year the rifle was repaired was 1949. This date should also be on your rifles registration as the date.

Your serial # is simply Y###x the 49 prefix denotes the year and all that should have been electropenciled into the side of the reciever.

Unfortunately it will be very difficult to acertain the born date of the rifle. My ftr luckily has a faded 1942 on the wrist. Yours should have had it too along with the manufacturer, but seems like that info is long lost.

Other clues you might be able to use to see which date the rifle was from, but i do not know that much about the specific markings and clues.

S&K makes a very strong mount that clamps to the charging bridge by means of a metal wedge and 1/4" allen bolt and to the rear of the action with a through bolt where the sight pivots.
I have such a mount and it can stand anything.
PP.
