Can anyone help me identify these markings? I assume the 7/14 is the month and day of manufacture. Is this correct? I'm particularly interested in identifying the 573 over "R A" under 12. "R A" = Rifle Association? 573/12 the branch numbers? Is it possible to link the #'s to a particular location or region?

The serial number of your rifle is 2061914DD.

1914 is very early and pretty rare.

Any pics of the whole rifle? Is it still full military or cut down like most?

Looks to be in very nice shape.

You are correct on the RA. It stands for "Rifle Association".

It is unusual to see an actual month/year date on a Ross Rifle. Quite possibly this one was ordered privately for target shooting. The 7th. month would be July, and WW1 did not start until August.

The usual sequence of ownership before WW1 was the Company/Regiment/rack number. However, 573 is too high for a Company number. It is possible that it might be a DCRA Membership number. The 12 would be the 12th. rifle received.

You might query the DCRA on this one.

Here is a picture of the whole rifle. I mean to take some nicer more detailed photo's when I can find the time and the right lighting conditions.

The rifle is in very nice shape and is full military. 100% original and not a restore — most of the screws look as though they have never been turned. I think the rifle has been in a museum at some point. The rifle has what appears to be museum ID numbers on the butt.

July 14, 1914— 23 days before Canada declared war Germany. The month/day stamp could of been an early practice that was later discontinued. I can't find anything on this in the "Ross Rifle Story" etc

Buffdog,

I will take your advice and try to contact someone from the DCRA. Hopefully they will be able to shed some more light on these markings.

Cheers

Bob,

Thanks for this information.

Does this mean that Ross had sent 573 rifles to RA12 (Hickson, Ont) at the point this rifle was issued. That's a lot of rifles for such a small town?

Sorry, I'm not interested in selling the rifle at this time.
