Hey all. I've been eyeing a pellet gun for backyard pest. Boy how the prices shot up! I would love a Diana but the make and model i am looking at is over $500.

Since times are tight I thought I'd look at something more economical. Any opinions on the crossman Optimus.22 Cal air gun? I want to avoid nitro piston and this one particular is spring. Shoots approx 950 fps. Any thoughts would be great.

'velocities up to 950fps with non-lead light pellets' that can ruin your gun.

I think its the same as a Crossman Phantom, but with a wood stock instead of plastic. You can find the sub-495fps Phantom on sale at Ctire or TSC for $89 and there are lots of very easy modifications (a screw driver, penny, 2L plastic pop bottle and some JB weld) for it that will have it shooting smoothly in the 600fps range with decent heavy .22.

It can't compete with the quality of the Diana in any means, but for the $89 value you can expect a loonie size group or better at 25 yards with the also fairly cheap Crossman 'premier' hollow points

there used to be a place out west that sold 'refurbished' Diana rifles for a decent price too, I forget the name...
