I was voluntarily helping a stranger gut his home on the Sumas flats. A team from my church including myself gutted everything below 4 feet. In the process I came across a Cooey 39 passed down to him from his father or grandfather (I can't recall). Being a gun nut, I was more concerned about that than much else in the home. It had been sitting in the water. Knowing he wouldn't have time to deal with it, I offered to clean up the rust that started. I removed all the rust and it looks great. However, the wood stock needs work also, but I do not have any experience with wood refinishing.

Does anyone in the Lower Mainland area want to refinish the stock just to be nice?

Sand paper and oil or varnish.

Please don't sand it. 0000 steel wool maybe and then the appropriate wood restoration ingredients. Lots of good stoc restoration/refinish videos on YouTube
