HELP: M1 Garand Springfield Tipo 2

Hiya,

So I recently picked up one of these Italian Tipo 2 Garands. All of the metal on the gun was in really decent shape, on account of all the grease it had been sleeping in for years. Anyways I stripped it down to clean it up before taking it out to the range this weekend.

As this is my first Garand I wasn't sure what to expect with the teardown. However cleaning, lubricating and reassembly seemed really easy until I realized I wasn't sure how exactly this part goes back into the receiver.

Looking at it, I assume it's some kinda receiver spacer block that is used when the guns are converted from 30-06 to 308. The scalloped, case-shaped-looking end probably faces up towards the shooter and probably forward of the follower, just before the chamber?

I really wasn't sure exactly how this chunk of steel goes back in and I was hoping one of you fine folks could help shed a little light on this for me.

Can't see your pic, but if it is the 7.62 spacer block, the bullet guide fits over it. The rifle will function with or without the spacer block. It's only there to prevent accidental loading of an en block with longer .30-06 ctgs. Here's a pic of the correctly installed spacer block.

How do you like your 308. Garand? Which receiver is it? . I’ve been looking them over for some time. Also what’s been your best group yet ? and how many yards?

I've built a number of Tipo 2 7.62mm Garands on Breda and Beretta receivers and they all worked out fine. The Italian surplus barrels I've used all gauge like new which is a big plus. I mostly shoot handloads with match grade bullets and accuracy is excellent. The rifle must be set up for best accuracy with proper stock fit and handguard clearances. Rear sight components should be selected for tight fit and properly lubed. The lower band must be rock solid on the barrel. Tight gas cylinder fit is important to avoid rotational front sight movement. No advertising of "internet groups", but they seldom disappoint.
