Hello all

I would like to make a nice target rifle. I am thinking of an set-up like this A Remington 700 action and some kind of aftermarket stainless barrel. I would like a macmillan shock. So what iam thinking is building it on either a .308 or .300 win mag caliber. Iam don't know much about making guns like this but i did have a Remingtion 700 police .308 and it would shoot into 1/2 with hand loads no problum and it had a very nice trigger as well. But i would like to make one my self its a pride thing. But what i don't know is who makes good stainless barrels that i can get in Canada. And what kind of action should i use ? Long action or short action. I know that alot of people use .308 for target shooting but what other calibers are good like i was thinking of 300 win mag for a bit more shock on target. If i ever want to do hunting with this rifle for moose and other stuff. there was a nice rig at me club on Saturday with a barrel brake on it one that looked like a chevron type thing it was a big caliber i could feel the shock wave about 20 feet away. So if you could help me out that would be grate and if you have any other suggestions on how/ what to build i would like to here it

300wm is going to wear the barrell out faster aswell as being more expensive. I like the .308 cartridge, that being said for barrells ROCK, Lilja, and I believe there is a Canadian guy but I cannot remember his name who all build an amazing barrell. McMillan is the cats ass of stocks but do not rule out the HS Percision or B&C for a lower cost option.

I have been talking to my friend who builds rifles for out local police force and there using GAILLARD BARRELS witch are built in canada too. So if its good for them its good for me. There using mark 4 scopes and bases. The rings are tps steel rings. So this is the setup i will go with too. am going to use the H-S Precision stock.

Gaillard makes great barrels..............there are a few other top notch Canadain barrel makers as well.........McPhee, Smith, and McClennan.

Can't go wrong with any of those barrels.........

Skip the MK4 base.............they are way over priced for what you get and the ring slots are not Picatinney Spec.MK4 bases only come flat (no MOA taper)............Look at a TPS, Badger, Near base.................

I`m going to open myself up to a whole bunch of criticism and accusations about being an armchair warrior, but what the hell.

Police marksmen typically only have to shoot across the street to engage a single target. They have to stare through a scope for hours on end and be ready to take the shot on a moments notice without a warm up shot or spotter, but long range accuracy is not what they drill. I am in no way diminishing how difficult their job is, but it`s not long range precision shooting so their rifle needs may be different than what you`re looking for.

Military snipers are almost the opposite. They are usually engaging multiple targets from greater distances and they have a spotter to help them walk the rounds onto target. They don't get the benefit of match grade ammo or handloads.

Neither discipline is what they typically portray in the movies or in novels.

Yes i know what you mean. The army snipers are alot more intune with long shots. But iam only looking to make 300 yard shots intill i get better and move out to longer ranges. But with that sed i want a rig that i only have to build once so i can get used to it and that. So yeah thats the plan for now.i think a barrel is going to be in the 400-500 range

Why a 700 action? For the cost of a 700 plus the accurizing, you may as well get a real custom action. the Barnard series from Robertson Composites look like great bargains. Heck, you could go 'all-canadian' with a Robertson stock, Gaillard barrel, and an action from ATR. Karl from KS arms here in Edmonton makes an action as well, though I'm not sure if it's a 'production' item, or a one-off thing.

Sorry, I am lost here..................all issue Military "sniper" ammo is match grade ( IE: M118, M852, & M118LR), and a lot of the Snipers handload for competitons...............The run of the mill issue FMJ ammo isn't going to cut it at long distance.....................

I am not going to call you an armchair warrior... What happens if a police sniper has to deploy on an airfield or on an acreage etc where the distance is more than the "typical" 37 metres across the street. They better have their dope for that particular distance and practiced at that distance which is never 100, 200, 300 etc. It's usually at 172, 276, 143... Also becoming proficient at longer ranges improves your shooting. To say police snipers do not "drill" at long range accuracy is a totally uninformed comment. Also as Skullboy indicated, police or military snipers shoot only match grade ammo.

I KNOW this to be true, having spent some time with the Calgary Tac Team members last spring, we were all shooting out to 1000 yards, experimenting with the 338s and 50s. I can not speak for all agencies needless to say, but I know several out west personally that shoot long regularly.

I also know that many agencies are moving away from MK4s, I know this because we are educating the various members on the advantages of Nightforce having MOA reticles and corresponding MOA turrets, then supplying the orders the education generates.

Back on topic now, If it were me I would buy a 700P in 308, it is plenty accurate with minor mods to achieve your goal out to 500 yards, by the time you have your skill level built to the degree that you need to move further out consistently, you will likely need to rebarrel anyway. We have "tuned" many 700Ps to achieve under 1/2 moa consistency, which is better than some customs are capable of.
At that point you already have a good platform to base a custom on, you mention you like the HS stock, there is nothing wrong with the 700 action, they are not as close a tolerance as our actions or many other custom actions are, but they can be made into extremely accurate rifles in the right hands, AND you can upgrade many of the parts as your skill improves making the transition from stock rifle to custom over a longer timeframe, which makes it easier to afford, and at the end of a year or so, you will have your custom, and the skill to use it well.
