Hey all, I got the chance to shoot a built rem 700 in the aics stock recently and got bit with the precision bug. So I'm thinking about building a similar rifle for myself. I'm new to all of this so I was hoping to get some help. I'm not looking to spend more than around 3g on the setup. I am thinking a rem 700 in a MDT Tac 21 stock. Which model 700 should I start with? I do like the 5r milspec in SS. Could I just put that in the stock and have a accurate rifle? Or am I better off buying a cheaper 700 and replacing the barrel etc. Basically I'm looking to build as much gun as I can for around 3k using a 700 and the TAC 21 stock. I was thinking 1k for rifle, 1k for stock and 1k for optics. Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks guys.

Depends if you just want it to look cool or if you want it to be more precise. You could probably get a cheaper 700 (used maybe), buy a match barrel, match trigger, an HS precision stock and a bedding job done and have it all spun together for about $2000.

If you get a TAC 21 you'd blow through you're budget if you wanted a match barrel, trigger job and and bedding job.

I'm planning a Savage build right now (barrel and gun on order) my budget is as follows:

Stevens 200: $220 (sell the barrel for $50) = $170 (I get a discount for working at a gunstore)
Mcgowen barrel in .260 Rem: $350
Timney trigger: $110
Barrel wrench: $45
Bedding material+various supplies: $60

So for $735 (before optics of course) I'm going to have one sweet rig. You don't have to spend much to get precision and I'd put this build up against a 5r thrown into a TAC chassis any day.

Guess the point of my whole post is that you're probably worse off to drop $1000 on a stock and skimp on other things (barrel, trigger ect.) than you are to get a still good, but cheaper, stock and sink the money into something more practical.

buy a rem clone action (pierce, barnard ect) with a match barrel (krieger, shilen, bartlein) chambered in your caliber of choice and then drop it into the tac 21 chassis. For a cheap "match" set up you can go with a mcgowen rem 700 pre-fit barrel with the barrel nut with a borden alpine action and your trigger of choice... that'll go right into the mdt tac 21 chassis.

Yea i figured I could do it cheaper without that stock...but I kinda have my heart set on the Tac 21, love how it looks.

interesting thanks, i'll take a look into this option

You can buy a full blown bench gun with a 36X scope for a lot less than 3 grand.
True but the OP is, I think looking for something other than a bench gun. OP - the R5 is a sub-moa rifle (some are half-moa but most are not ) and is a fine, factory rifle. A likely more accurate way to go would be an SPS action and custom barrel but (a) there may be a wait (b) there will be gunsmithing costs and (c) is may not be noticeably more accurate as some improvement will depend on you and your ammo. The TAC 21 is a fine stock - I've gone the AICS route but I've no criticism of TAC 21 and Laslo is a good guy also. To outfit the TAC 21 with appropriate buttstock may be a bit over a grand but I'm not sure. Leaving a grand for glass maybe a bit light - Vortex and Sightron and Elite 4200/6500 are within that range but I'd encourage you to consider a (used) Leupold MK4 or, better yet, a NF NXS.

You could take a look at one of the savages on the precision forum, there is one really nice one for $1250 in a choate tactical stock and a match grade 260rem barrel, slap on a really nice sightron SIII 6-24x56 and you are still $1k under the $3000 budget. Plenty of room for reloading supplies and bullets, or beer....

For 3k you could build a rifle on a Barnard or Pierce action. Not much room for optics, but those can always be upgraded when funds are available.

I can supply a barreled (shilen select match) pierce action for about 1500$ in the chambering of your choice. On a rem action the price would be 960$ for a barreled (shilen select match) action. Leaves lots left for a stock and other goodies.
