Help me buy my first shotgun!

Hello, I've recently completed my non-restricted firearms course and am looking for some advice on my first firearm purchase.

I'm a little picky, so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for. I want a well rounded pump action shotgun for home defence, though if hunting for food became the norm, it should handle well in that aspect. Nothing over $500, though preferably under $300. At least a 12 gauge, though the wider variety of ammo it can take the better. I want a lot of options when it comes to customization. With that said, the overall design is important. I really want it to have that iconic, walnut stock, blued metal finish look.

Essentially like this:

Though I'd like the option to modify it to look like this someday down the road:

Hopefully that gives you a good idea for what I'm looking for. I'm from the maritimes, so hopefully I can find what I'm looking for locally. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

there really is only one of two choices like the others said, an 870 or a 500. everything under the sun is available for both of them.

You don't even need a 12ga 3", you could look around for an older Wingmaster, they do come up once in a while rather inexpensive at Tactical Ordinance for under $200. You can see picks of some of them being resold in the EE for around $300 plus shipping.

Thanks everyone for the input!

After extensive review, I think I'm going to go for the Mossberg 500!

I'm looking for a 5+1 magazine, 18.5" barrel model. Does anyone know the best place to find one in the maritimes? Also, is it possible to add a loading gate? Most people seem to frown upon them, but I just like the feel of how the shells slide in.

Thanks

I have both an 870, and a mossberg 535. I really can't say anything bad about either gun. The 870 may be a little better made, and just feels a little more "solid", and the mossberg feels loose and rattles a bit. But both are fine guns... They will pretty much always work, and when you pull the trigger they will make a bang lol.

Not positive where in the Maritimes you are, but your nearest store that sells guns should either have what you want or be easily able to order it in for you. You may luck out and they may have a used one for very cheap if they deal in used guns.

Just order online. Some site sponsors have a 10$ flat rate across Canada. places like Cabelas will charge around 20-25$ for shipping. not that much considering your getting exactly what you want right to your door!

You can't go wrong with a 500 I personally love mine, shot pretty much anything through it from old cardboard shells to less lethal rounds it was always super accurate.

I got mine from Epps for under 500$ with 3 barrells.
