Okay, I'm looking for a 9mm pistol.
I don't have a ton of money to spend, but would still like something decent.

So far my choices are:

-Ruger SR9
-Smith & Wesson SD9VE
-Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm Carry and Range
-Walther PPX 9mm Range Kit

Thanks

The m&p9 is, in my opinion, one of the most solid reliable duty style pistols available. Mine has never failed and is reasonably accurate.
The sr9 is my second Pick. It gets good reviews especially from a value perspective. And, I've actually put my money where my mouth is and I've just purchased an SR45.
The Walther is a solid gun also. Accurate and reliable. But there have been a lot of complaints about the grip. I guess if you don't like... You hate.

Check out the FNs-9L... Gets a great "go over" from Hickock45 and it will be my next 9mm purchase.
It's available at a couple sponsored dealers.

you can pick up a used P226 for around that price,
I bought the NP-22 norinco for 350$. it shoots well, but im not sure i would have bought it again...

browning hi power is in that range and is a beautiful gun although looks like you want a polymer frame
beretta 92fs nice in inox or black...just one of the nicest guns out there
people love the CZ's but there freaking ugly as sin.
sometimes theres a H&K on the equipment exchange for 700$

I was thinking Norinco from the start, but for a bit more, I can step up for something known to be more reliable

theres nothing wrong with the norinco reliability. i shot 500 rounds through it and it hasnt jammed.
a bit more is still twice the price. the m&P's are what 700$? after tax 800$
the norinco will shoot better than you can anyway (assuming your new shooter), and once your better buy something better than the S&W.
the norinco just dont feel as nice, but whatever its a learner.

only reason i dont like the NP-22 is because as soon as i bought it a vintage browning hi power became available, and i just like like older guns better.

is this your first gun?

Don't get Norinco, just save up a little more and buy a good quality brand name gun.. you won't regret it.
Out of those options I would pick the M&P 9.. If you look around on the EE you can find used Glock's or Sig 226's in and around that price range as well if they interest you at all.

CZ 75 B, 9mm, Omega Trigger, Black Finish, Fixed Sights offered from Wolverine. I used to own a CZ 75B and absolutely loved it. Very accurate gun, and fits most people very well... it has a very comfortable grip, very, very well made. Another poster called the gun ugly... I don't know why, other than personal choice. The CZ is a very high quality gun, for a good price. The knock against the CZ is that it is double action. Single action triggers generally have shorter pull, and are crisper.

Whatever you choose, I'd recommend not going after some of the cheapest guns, just to own a 9mm. You will end up being unhappy with your cheap gun, and eventually spend more, buying its replacement. eg. The SAM (Shooters Arms Manufacturing) are visually appealing for the price, but the rear sight gets loose right away, and is rather awful.

Also, the smaller titan framed models (SAM offers a few in 9mm and .45) recoil too much due to less mass. The titan frames are eye candy, but not practical or accurate.

Edit: Why did I get rid of my CZ? I lost interest in handguns. I enjoy shooting a .22, but my real passion is trap shooting.

I don't want cheap, But I don't have 1K to toss at a pistol either. My shotgun and sks will see more use at the range then my handgun will. I put up that list as they are reasonably priced, and have good reviews.
I may just wait to if I can get a used one. Maybe try some at the range?

I wouldn't put the CZ in the 'cheap'category in terms of quality. CZ offer as accurate of 4.25" barrel 9mm's as you will find, are simple to dismantle & clean, & will last you a long, long time. The truth is, unless you shoot a competitive handgun sport like IDPA or IPSC, handguns do get boring, fairly quickly after the novelty of just firing a handgun wears off. As you know, in Canada they can't be used for self defense, or taken anywhere but the gun range.

I am very content shooting a .22. It is cheap to shoot, and just as much fun.

For trap, I do own a very pretty BT-99 Golden clays, 34". The ported barrel & gracoil recoil system result in zero barrel jump and minimal recoil. My very has the prettier wood, & set me back just over $4000. Given it is the only discipline I love to shoot, it was worth every dollar.

If some one were to ask me what 9mm to get as a first hand gun, I would have to say CZ.

Solid, Reliable, Accurate and Affordable.

As for model, go 85 Combat (skip the 75) or a SP series if you have competition inspirations.

I have BHP, M&P, Girsan, and others - CZ is the best entry level choice, IMHO.

I'm a really big Sig fan, so to stay close to that price range I would say an SP2022, or used P226. Though from that list, the M&P would be my choice. They are a solid gun, I really like them.

Can't argue with the General.

OP, can I ask why you've narrowed your search down to the aforementioned pistols? All solid choices to be sure, but curious.

+1 Definately the way I'd go If I did it over..

Have you looked at the Jericho yet ? Internals are a copy of the CZ 75 and its built by IWI which has a good name in quality, and its about $200 less then the CZ.

Beat me to it....Jericho was going to be my suggestion. There were some pretty attractively priced Jericho range kits around last year.

I was so impressed when I received my FNS-40L from Wolverine that I ordered the FNS-9L as well. Street price in the US is about USD $699 (Approx CAD $870).
EFK Fire Dragon Barrels have told me that their .357 SIG and .40 S&W Barrels are a drop-in fit (ported, threaded or standard 5"). Only a .40 S&W FNS magazine is otherwise needed for caliber conversion from 9mm.
