Help me decide: Norc 1911 Commander or Ruger SR1911?

Okay so I need help deciding between the two. Is it worth double the price to get the Ruger? Opinions and facts are both appreciated however there is no need for "the norc is a commie piece of junk" I know that the Ruger will be better quality overall and yes I would rather buy american than chinese.

thanks for your input.

Buy the Nork so you have something to shoot while you wait for your SR1911.
Is the Ruger twice the gun??? Time will tell...but damn they look good.

I have a Norinco 1911A1, NP29, M-93, and an M14s.
Lastest one was the NP29. Very good fit and finish IMO.
It's accurate, dependable, and a good trigger pull.
No complaints with the other Norincos I own, either.
BUT
Although I don't own or shot one,
I'd go with the Ruger SR1911, good reviews.
Stainless and it's just gotta be a better gun.
And worth it.

I've owned FOUR Norc 1911 .45 cal pistols. Every one of them needed dehorning (I have girlie soft 'teacher' hands :D ) and then re-bluing afterwards. I've even owned TWO Norc NP29's 9mm single stack model and they too needed dehorning and then sandblasting followed up by the parkerizing tank. I was happy with the projects and the way they shot. I learned so much from all these pistols over the 10 years. :) Good times.

Today, I shoot an STI Spartan that I bought from Gunnar at Armco for $ 799 (landed here for $ 899 give or take. Smoother, rounded edges, well finished, tweaked 3.5 lb trigger, parkerized surface, fiber optic front sight, what's not to like? So I paid twice the price, and I no longer had to tweak anything. Outta da box, this pistol makes me shoot like a house of fire

:runaway: I'm a rock star on the firing range ! I'm super pleased with the STI Product. There, I hope this helps your narrow your choices, or at least justify your purchase. Either way, you are gonna have fun!

This Ruger is going to give STI a run for it's money;) All they need to do now is offer a 9mm!

I don't think you can compare these two. The Ruger is in a totally different class. It all comes down to how much you want to spend and features you are looking for. You might want to consider the S.A.M 1911 as an alternative to the Norinco. I've heard nothing but good things on them.

Yes I know these are different classes of firearms but I am buying my first 1911 and wondering shoild I just go with a norc or should I enter at a higher level with the Ruger? I can afford the ruger but if I bought the norc I would have an extra $350 laying around for other gun stuff. I hear good things about the latest run of norc 1911s. Personally I want the Ruger but I need to justify spending another $350.

I hear ya. I'm looking to buy my first 1911 as well. Just like you I was considering a Norinco and S.A.M but I know I won't be satisfied if I do. Ruger all the way for me. If I get impatient then it might be an STI Spartan.

I have two Nor 1911, one in 9mm and one .45, they are good shooter and I am happy with them, but here is the deal, sometimes a gun is not just for pull the trigger, it can also a piece of art to look at and therefore Nor is more for a budget shooter who is not care the fit and finish. Ruger is a good deal for the quality.

I have the Norc 1911 Commander and have no regrets. I have man hands so the rough finish is no biggie:p. If this were my decision, being a blue collar worker, the above in bold would be the deciding factor, that's what would work for me.YMMV

Either way, enjoy your new gun....

norc 1911

I have a norc 1911a1. After a few touches with a small file and some internal polishing it was much nicer to shoot. After several thousand rounds I upgraded the internals (under $100) and it is very nice to shoot now, so.... I'm sure either is a good choice. In the end the norc will be cheaper. Just my .02

As much as I'm a Norinco defender if you want a fit and finish that makes you smile every time then pay the extra and get the Ruger or an STI or whatever in that sort of price range. The Norcs shoot just fine but every one I've got or handled is a little rough here and a bit sloppy there. I don't mind too much because of the price and I enjoy tinkering at fixing such things. But when the Rugers become a little more common up this way to where I can actually see and hold one it's going to be a choice for my new "really nice" 1911 of the Ruger or a stainless S&W 1911 in .45ACP.

I was in the same boat as you. Decided on a norinco in the end. Picked up a nickle one on the EE for 400 bucks. Waiting for delivery.... I almost went for the more expensive model the BUL m5 which looks to be a nice piece. However with the cost of ammo I decided I'm going to shoot my glock 17 more so why spend 700 on a safe queen. I just want the 45 for special occasions.

I must have been a lucky SOB, because I have recently gotten the 1911 Norc 9mm NP29 and the fit and finish are truly excellent. Even the internals are nice.
I have a 1911a1 in .45 that is somewhat rougher in its finish, but its also several years old. I believe Norinco is catching up in the fit and finish department.
I wasn't too keen on the trigger feel of the np29 , but by the time I got through 6 or so boxes of ammo, even the trigger felt smoother. FRIGGIN LOVE THIS NP29!!!!!

I am sort of in the same boat , as I (hopefully ,if they actually come this time) have an order in with sfrc for the S&W 1911 commemorative 45. My two problems , if you can call it that ,do I shoot the S&W 45 or not and I wanted to get a seconder for every day (more like every 2 months ) shooting. Just like most of the folks here are saying the norc ,is cheaper by half but that ruger looks mighty fine!
I guess like guys have been saying if you get the norc and don't like it ,you can sell it with only about a $100 loss.
I think the only reason we need to go to the states with the norcs is if we are invading them to get back our moose in Maine or to build a bridge from Miami to Cuba so we can drive over to get cigars!
