Help me decide on a 1700/1800 repro flinter (or minie rifle)

Lyman guns are fine for what they are, but they are quite a ways from authentic. For someone who is interested in traditional, authentic pieces, the Lyman offerings are pedestrian at best, offensive at worst. One would need to hold a custom or semi-custom repro to really see the difference, but they would be evident

Never said they were authentic historically
Nor is any other modern arm he is likely to buy.

Please tell what class of shooter would find another man's rifle offensive or pedestrian. I would very much like to avoid thier company.

A person who is interested in authenticity would, that's who! If a person is really interested in only British double rifles, he would probably find the Baikal double rifles offensive. For a person who just likes guns, then no gun would be seen as offensive. We all have different tastes, and just because a person thinks another guy's gun is uninteresting doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the gun itself - it is just not the gun for him. However, when a gun is trying to be something in particular, it should do it right. The Lymans are trying to be a Hawken, but don't make it. They end up becoming something bland instead, but the quality is good.

H Wally...next time you are in town go to International Sports in Langley they had a really fine flinter for about $600 but well worth it.They could recommend something for you because they are in to black powder shooting.
Tell them it was the guy that tried to sell the 2008 Red Honda Fit to the sales lady that sent you.:D
