Well I have a large ring small shank Turk mauser, chambered in 8X57. Bubba has been at her, the barrel is cut down, bolt handle bent, drilled and tapped for bases and a aftermarket detachable magizine has been added to it. So I thinking about getting her reamed out to 8mm 06, but got thinking maybe I should go big, like a 8mm Remingtin Magnum, but is the action strong enough? I know the bolt face would have to be opened up. There are tons of room in the mag to allow for the bigger cartridge. Am I dreaming? anybody got any other sudjestions? Thanks

The 8 Rem Mag is probably too much cartridge for a Turk Mauser, both in length and power. You can open up the length on a 98 (although you may have an intermediate length Turk which would mean you can't), but the high pressures involved would most likely result in bolt set back. If you want to stay with an 8, go with an 8mm-06 or the AI version. I shoot the 8mm-06 AI (as well as the 8 Mauser, 8 Gibbs, 8x68S, and the 8 Rem Mag), and it's a pretty damned good cartridge. You could even go to the 8 Gibbs without too much trouble, for even more velocity. Not really anything wrong with the 8 Mauser either for that matter. North American loads are pretty wimpy, but the Euro stuff is pretty hot. You might even get an 8 WSM to work in there (323 WSM), feeding might be tough though. - dan

I agree with dan 8mm ackley improved would be cheap and will get you a bit more velocity and second the fact that stock 8mm loaded right is pretty hard to beat. Feeding is always going to be the most frustrating part when you do a conversion.

Thanks for the replies, I cleaned the snot outta the barrel as it was dark, and found it to be in pretty bad shape. I guess I'll have to re-barrell it to that 22-250 I've always wanted!
