I have a rifle (Ruger M77) that needs to be re-crowned. The barrel has been Parkerized many years ago with a stainless look, and has several scratches right through the finish, so it will need redoing. It sports a 22" barrel.

Now my thought lol

Re-barrel 24" stainless, target crown, bedded and floated in a Boyds laminate stock (pepper black/grey). Now I'm thinking of going with the 284 Win instead of the 280 Rem.

Any thought as to the 284 Win. I do know the capabilities of the 280 and have owned a couple in the past, but never a 284 Win.

the .284 will offer you nothing you don't already have with a .280....actually probably less. Also the .284 is a short action and the .280 is a long action. That may cause some issues as far as rebarreling. I would get a 24" barrel and chamber it to .280 AI.

X2. The 280 AI has much to offer.

I must disagree with this post, the barreling of a long action to 284 will cause no issues at all. In fact you may find that the 284 in this action will outperform both the 280 and the AI, particularly if you throat it to take advantage of the long magazine. You should end up with more useable capacity due to much less bullet intrusion into the case. It has also been my experience that short fat cases out perform longer thinner ones in the same caliber and having the same capacity.
Just my experience.
