Hello all.

I recently purchased a reproduction 1907 sling. It is still fairly new leather. I would like to oil it and was advised that neatsfoot oil was the product to use. (Pure with no petroleum)

I am having a hard time finding any out where I live and work. Live in Alliston and work in Newmarket..

Where have you found it? Or is there something else you would recommend.

Thanks.

Thanks. Didn't see that one.
Funny you mention lanolin. My wife used that while breastfeeding our kids. I will take a look for for the fluid film you mentioned.

Go to any equine (horse tack) store (eg. Greenhawk). You'll get the pure oil there. I wouldn't use Fluid Film, unless you can stand the rotten stink of the stuff. Enough to gag a pig. My wife uses neatsfoot for her horse saddle, reins, bridle, etc. Really soaks in and it has no odour.

There is a place in Mississauga with leather goods, tools, preservatives and neatsfoot oil. It's located on Kennedy, north of Matheson blvd (I an't remember exact adress)

If you are absolutely dead set that its neatsfoot oil you want and can't find it locally, it can be purchased on ebay... I had no choice, until I discovered a local Tandy Leather factory sold it by the gallon! Live and learn :D

Neats Foot oil, in the long run is ####. ;) Will make the leather dark and oily. We've come a long ways and there are better treatments. Greenhawk, as suggested, will have them and make a suggestion. Stuff we use on our bridles and other riding equipment is called Belvoir leather balsam, from Greenhawk.

Grizz

As above, most leather conditioners are combinations of lanolin and beeswax and a light petroleum oil. Some have glycerine too.

You can also use Bag Balm, a combination of lanolin and petroleum jelly. Udderly conditioning.

Neetsfoot oil is rendered animal fat, and oxidizes and hardens with time. Not the best treatment for long term. That's why products with lanolin, beeswax, and synthetic oils are preferred.

Thanks for all you input. I am not dead set on using neatsfoot, feet, oil. It was only recommended to me but I am always open to better ideas and suggestions.

I will take a further look into the fluid film and will take a look into the equine products as well.

I am in no rush as the sling is new and just sitting on a shelf.

I should add, that lanolin is not a fat like neetsfoot. Lanolin is actually a wax, that's why it doesn't break down or oxidize like a fat (neetsfoot). It's also why lanolin (Fluid Film) is great for rustproofing, and why it doesn't harden.

You will also find Saddle Soap, which isn't just a mild soap, but a combination of oils, lanolin, and glycerin, which cleans and protects/moisturizes leather.
