My inland GI M1 carbine has 2 serious problems(relatively). First of all, the bolt has a lot of "slop" in that it has loads of side to side play. When firing, it seems to slip over the base of the case sometimes, and get jammed halfway open. Next, the gas piston pops out every 20 or so rounds. I have screwed it back it, and then tapped the crenellations on the nut, to try and solidly put it in. It always pops out again though. Anybody have this happen to them, or at least know how to fix it? I'll get some pics if it's required...

Mag is your problem for feeding the bolts do have play..this is why the gun functions in most conditions

2 DO NOT try and tighten that nut without the PROPER wrench

you WILL wreck it and you may dammage the gas piston houseing that is PART of the barrel meaning you would have to replace the barrel

Now the M1 carbine is listed on US list as NO export im not sure if the gas piston wrench is covered.....

"...gas piston pops out..." Some putz took it out at some time. Get the wrench, tighten it well and stake it in place. You may need a new gas piston nut too.
Like contact148 says, nearly every jam like you're having is caused by the mag. Change mags or try tweaking the lips in a wee bit. Long, fine, needle nosed pliers will do it.

m1 problems

there is a guy (craven2) selling the takedown kit on the exchange right now bolt tool, trigger spring tool, and nut wrench.check for wear in the rails that the operating rod slides along they sometimes wear and also check the bolt to operating rod mating they can go together wrong.if you need a new nut i have one.

"...US STATE DEPT does not stop export of M1 carbines anymore..." Somebody has given you bad info. The Carbine is on the 'Restricted for Export' list. That means parts are restricted too.

FWIW:
This is a good US source for M1 Carbine tools & parts , pricey but very high quality.

www.fultonarmory.com

The " M1 Carbine Owner's Guide " by Ruth & Duff is an excellent manual. Fulton sells it for around $22.00 USD.

Hope this helps.
