Im looking for some ammo Guru's to help me figure out what this is. I found it on a rocky beach in South Korea this afternoon. Its badly corroded..in fact i cant tell you how long the case is because the end has been either broken or eroded. The only markings i can see on the end are the numbers "4 5" on the bottom and either "S I" or "S J" on the top...its really hard to tell. I was kinda hoping it was korean war era but who knows it could be modern.

here are some poor pics (penny for scale)

I should also say it feels to me alot like a 7.62x39 case (but i havnt seen a gun or ammo for over 7 months!) I also don't think the North Koreans had sks's during the Korean war (didnt they have WWII Japanese weapons?) The Chinese did not start producing the sks until 1956 and the fighting was done by 1953. (The soviets had them but they didn't supply rifles did they?)

Cool! I wouldn't hold too many hopes of it being Korean war vintage, though. i found a coin in the ocean in Thailand a few years back, and thinking I had found something special, grabbed it. It was at least as corroded as your casing, and after liberal scrubbing to determine its age, I found it was a 2004 Euro cent!

Much good Militaria around Korea? I'm in Taiwan, and hoped there would be some good stuff, but very little. Lots of militaria and BB gun nuts, though; for a society where firearms are basically prohibited, the Taiwanese sure have a lot more enthusiasm for firearms than average Canadians.

IMHO 30-06 made at St Louis Ordnance Plant (SL) 1945. Lot of that calibre shot off 1950-53.

Thanks for the info green....i guess it could be "S L" its really hard to say for sure, i should see if i can clean it up a bit better. I guess the US soldiers would have been using 30-06 out of WWII garands then so that would make sense.

ollie i don't know if i will be going to Taiwan before i go home but if i do i will shoot you a PM, i do love beer!
