Help me identify please

My brother has a Mauser in his collection of stuff that he would like me to help identify it is a .308. I'm not sure how to post pics here. PM me and I'll send pics. Or let me know how to post.

If it is a Mauser 98 with a big "7.62" stamped on the receiver ring and likely branded into the butt stock, that would sound like an Isreali conversion of a military 98 that used to be in 8x57. I do not think any original Mauser was built in 308 Win, anywhere. FN did a run of Mauser 98's in 30-06 in 1950-1951 for the Belgian Army and their Navy, but that is closest that I know of. The 308 Win was introduced by Winchester in 1952, two years before NATO adopted the near twin as 7.62 NATO - I am thinking that is after all the military mausers had already been built. You do not say it is a military rifle - could be by Parker Hale or several other companies that built sporter rifles using Mauser action and chambered in 308 Win.
 
OP has sent some pictures - it is a Spanish Guardia conversion to 7.62 NATO - small ring, with "anti-bind" ridge within the left bolt race way, so possibly originally a Spanish 1893 or 1916 or something like that, Guardia ("falangist") crest on receiver, set into a sporter stock. The receiver has serial number 3Z ###X, and is marked CAL 7.62. The barrel has the thinned shoulder at the receiver, so barrel was set back for the re-chambering, when the barrel was re-bored to 30 caliber. Interesting to me, the receiver has NOT been drilled or tapped for scope bases. Compared to pictures in MMROTW book, the rear sight on the barrel appears to be like the Spanish Model of 1916, Second Pattern.
