A friend is helping a acquaintance get situated at his new ranch and covering the basic firearms. So far he’s acquired a savage mark ll 22lr for free, a Winchester SPX 12g for $250 and this Parker Hale in 30-06 for $80 but the Parker hale did not come with a magazine.

Could someone with more knowledge of Parker hale firearms maybe chime in and give me some insight into what model this could be please. The only markings on the rifle are the company name Parker hale and caliber of 30-06

Any help would be appreciated.

I think it would be a 1200C.
Unless he gets lucky, he may have to pay more for a magazine than he did for the rifle.
If he wants to take it apart, it is necessary to drive out the magazine catch pin and remove the catch and its spring. The secret screw hidden by the magazine catch will be revealed. Remove it, and the front and rear receiver screws. Don't lose the little bushing tht the secret screw passes through.
These PHs shoot well, and if he can find a magazine for a reasonable price, he will have a good, modestly priced rifle.

I would agree with Post #2 - about going "nuts" here trying to identify various Parker Hale from old catalogues and ads - does not appear to be much reference material existing for them. Various versions like 1000C, 1100C and 1200C seemed to use exact same part numbers for replacement parts - except for the stocks - which might have been most of the difference between the various models. Earlier versions seemed to have had scope bases "soldered" to the receiver - no screws used to attach them - I have had a couple - they were marked like "Safari Super", "Safari De Luxe" on left side of receiver. Your pictures show a commercial 98 action - not a former military style - no thumb cut out - no stripper clip notch. You were given good advice above how to get that one apart - is at least one received here that action screws were removed, then brute force used to overcome that "hidden screw" and to break the stock in doing so. Do NOT strip that little hidden screw or the boss that it threads in to - is a BA series thread - so going to be unusual to find in North America, or to find a tap or die for it to repair damage.

As far as magazines - you will find 308 Win / 243 Win size will fit perfectly to the rifle - although a 30-06 cartridge will not properly fit into that magazine - most Parker Hale magazines on hand here actually have the cartridge or cartridge family engraved on the side of it - for the 308 Win versus the 30-06 - you will find that the "crease" in the magazine box is further forward on the 30-06 one that you want.

Last price I saw for a PH magazine was $350. You may find a bottom metal if you check InterSurplus, it might be cheaper to convert to a floorplate although I don’t know how easy the job is, or if you’ll be able to find the parts to do so.

I see a lot of 1200c with rose wood fore-ends and skip line checkering. Yours looks like one I had, a 1000c. I love the wundhammer swell in the pistol grip, something you don’t see on a lot of other guns. The hand cut checkering will wear your fingerprints off if you are a 16 yo with a lot of time, 130 gr. hollow points and an abundance of groundhogs.

I agree that it would be a 1200C. I've had several PH rifles and they have all been good shooters, as far as I'm concerned they're sleepers and have only begun to go up in value in the last few years. Good luck finding a magazine and don't be surprised to pay more, maybe a lot more for one than the rifle!

If the owner ever gets that barrelled action separated from that stock, should be Birmingham proof stamps along outer part of barrel - on the side, or perhaps on the bottom of the barrel - is a code that was used - the various letters on each side of the "X" (actually crossed pennants) are the year that the assembly was "proofed", if that is of interest to the owner. So far as I know, that is about as close as can be got for actual year of manufacture for Parker Hale Mauser 98 based rifles. The letters typically very small - like 1/16" (1.5 mm) tall - might need magnify glass to read them. Is several of that type of rifle here with the last four digits of rifle serial number stamped into the rear end of the bolt handle "root" where it emerges from the bolt body. Will be "BNP" - "Birmingham Nitro Proof" - stamped in various places - likely on left side of front receiver ring and somewhere on the bolt handle - so far as I know, only the stamp on the barrel chamber area - often below the wood line - show the year that the assembly was proof tested.

The PH 1200C was notorious for unlatching it's magazine in the hunting fields.

For sure! Perhaps late 1970's / early 1980's, I had bought a used Parker Hale detachable magazine 30-06 - would probably have fired it dozens of times at target range without issue. Took it deer hunting - saw one at top of a coulee - fired at it - saw it run down that coulee and turn left - that coulee drained out to a lake - I thought that I could "cut it off" for another shot - by the time I crested the lake bank, deer tracks in snow on the lake beach said he had beat me there, and had got up into another coulee. Then looked down at rifle - no magazine. Opened the bolt - nothing in chamber - retraced my steps back to where I fired that first shot - yep - magazine and extracted, fired cartridge laying there in the snow. I traced that to excessive wear on little nubs on front and rear of that magazine - the latch would not consistently hold it. The previous owner was interested to get that rifle back, so he got it, and still has it - as far as I know.

I suspect that the PH detachable magazine system was developed (cobbled together?) to meet a market demand.
Compared to what is available now, it leaves a lot to be desired.

This is a PH 1200c in 243win. A buddy gave it to me not long ago. I had Mitch shorten it to 20” barrel. It shoots amazing! Heavy though…

7mag - is a curiosity to me - how do you know that is/was a Model 1200?? Is there some marking on that one that I have missed on the various rifles here? I do not know how to tell 1000 versus 1100 versus 1200 - so maybe you know how? From Parker Hale catalogues and various ads from back in the day, I think all PH models were available in "clip" versions (ending in "c") or in hinged floor plate versions, but I am not aware of any that had 1000, 1100 or 1200 markings of any sort?

That is a good question… I was just going off extensive internet research and thats what I came up with. There are no markings that I can see that say… I have seen tons for sale that are identical and listed as a 1200c…. I apologize to original poster if im wrong… This one does have removable magazine…

7mag - is same here - I own or owned several with similar stock styling as your picture - also others with different stocks - has me thinking that Parker Hale made the difference as the stocks on the rifle - not the metal parts. I was hoping that there was a way to tell the difference - other than the wood - is one here that I bought wood stock, magazine and metal barrelled action all in three separate purchases - no clue what that is now, but all fits together well!!
