As I'm waiting for my Savage 93GL (.22wmr) from P&D, I'd like to know some of your opinions on a scope that would match it. I'm positive there's a $500+ scope for rimfire, so let's not go there. :p

Something that has value proportional to the rifle (it cost me $330, with med. height scope rings), it has to be decently durable, I'm not too fussy about colour but expect something black (like most scopes tend to be anyways), and I'd prefer something in the *x32mm range (I'm an astronomer as well, and understand that light-gathering is a very big factor - not to mention, they just look better  ). Variable magnification is a plus, but not necessary.

Help me out guys! :)

One consideration is the parallax setting - most centrefire scopes are 100 - 150 y, while rimfire scopes are set at 50 y. Personally, I'd go with a good quality rimfire, say fixed 4X. You should be able to get something for less than 150$

Thanks cosmic. I figured something along those lines. The Swift scope i'm looking at is a dedicated rimfire scope. I actually have a .22WMR, and the scope made for standard .22, but it's the closest I'm going ot get!

(On that note, I noticed a scope dedicated to the .17HMR)

Tasco makes a pretty nice rimfire scope. I've got the MAG39X32 mounted on my .22 Ran me about 55 bucks at P&D. Only gripe are the supplied rings, but that obviously is of no concern to you. :p

I have a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40mm on my 22 magnum. It's a pretty good scope for the money. If your worried about parallax you could step up to the 4-12x40mm Trophy with an adjustable objective. I've never had a problem running a "normal" scope on a rimfire though. My 10/22 has Bushnell Elite 2-7x32mm and it shoots tiny groups at 50 yards.

Both Swift and Mueller are excellent scopes. Bushnell, IMHO, also makes a great scope. There 3200 and 4200 line of scopes are great. I would look into at least the 3200, they carry them in many different power ranges

I have a Bushnell Legend 5-15x40AO on my 10/22. It might be a bit much, but I like how clear it is.

Burris 3-9x 40 mm Fullfield II

On ebay. About $200 Canadian after all is said and done. The optics are as clear as a Leupold. A very nice scope. In the stores it's about $300-350. Have to love the internet.

For the scope or the gun? ;)

No gun yet, waiting for a package from P&D. Hopefully by next Friday the CP guy will show up at my door. ;)

No scope, I want to wait a bit, well, till next payday anyways. :D

Wrong Way,
Have you tried the Burris?
The glass is as clear. The main drawback is that you see more of the lense frame housing than with the Leupolds, Zeis etc.
I've tried a lot of Leupolds, even a Swaroski and a Zeis. Given the option I'd go with the Leupold, (ZEIS and Swaroski if I could afford it) but the Burris is definately on my list as a compromise. The Bushnell, BSA, Weaver, Simmons etc scopes don't make my list. So ya I'm picky. I own a Simmons mag44 and it's an ok scope but doesn't compare to the Burris, and doesn't even come close to the Leupold.
Personally I think the Burris is a sleeper. They have good performance, but the name isn't as well known.
