So I recently picked up a surplus Mauser 98, now I would love to mount a scope on here and it already had been drilled and tapped

and here as well

now I would like to use my iron sights still and if the mount blocks them then its is a no go for that mount. problem is these sights are pretty low.

Now if any of you guys would be able to direct me to a great place to pick up some low mounts I would greatly appreciate it. I plan to get some see through rings and stick a good x4 or x6 power 30mm or 40mm. Thanks for reading -Miller854

Whatever clown did that should be keelhauled.

Or woolded.

Weaver bases are very low if you get the right ones for a 98. They also make rings with a greathuge tunnel in the bottom so you can use the irons.

Should be available at any decent sporting-goods shop. Bases are about $4 each, rings will run about $30.

Sad to see some idiot took a nice Brazilian Mauser and drilled it. People like that should have large, unnecessary holes drilled into their cars. Speed holes, to make the car go faster.

OP, about 35 years ago, it was not that uncommon to see those lovely Brazilian 1908 and 1935 Mausers stripped to their receivers and made up into fine hunting rifles.

They were never cheap but the actions were tight, extremely well made and square to center.

They were a gunsmith's dream. I remember a fellow in Kelowna, that brought in a crate of them to convert into several different calibers. I was lucky enough to get all of the stock/metal bits from him before he tossed out the bands and cut up the stocks for firewood.

I still have a barrel left from him as well but I had to pay him $10 each for them at the time.

Up until a few years ago, there was a fellow from Kamloops that would come to the show with a half dozen of these actions, new bolt handle, rear bridge machined flat, the ring and bridge d&ted and the blue matched up perfectly.

He wanted $275 each for them. At the time, I didn't have my own tools and bought one to build up. I couldn't get the work done and pick up an action that cheaply.

That rifle will make a fine sporter. If the barrel is in excellent condition, like so many of those rifles were, it will be very accurate as well.

There is no cheap or feasible way to put that old girl back into full military configuration.

Get a decent stock for it, wood or plastic, your choice.

Finish the job. Do it right though and make nice. You may want to cut back the barrel to a more manageable length as well.

Now, if the stock and bands are all still intact, put them up for sale on the EE. They won't last long. If it's in good shape, you should be able to get enough out of it to pick up a 95% finished and fully inletted walnut or even a laminated stock from Boyd's in the US.

Right now, the rifle is a beater. A virtual ugly duckling, ready to become a swan.

The mods to that rifle were probably done 35 - 40 years ago.

The Brazilians were considered to be the cream of the milsurps for the basis of a fine custom sporter.

They were arguably some of the best and most well finished rifles every produced by Mauser for any military.

Do that old girl a favor, and dress her up.

So I went to a gun smith and for what I'm looking for mount wise I might have to make my own. I will probably have to make a simaler mount to the ww2 german side claw mount. Oh well I guess I have a new project to keep mme busy for the couple of months. Thanks for the imput. -miller854

Put on a Repro set of High Turret Mounts.

^ This.

Also keep in mind that unless you were to bubba the bolt handle, only a high mount will work and you will be using a chin weld to shoot it (not ideal). The most workable option is a scout scope on the rear sight mount.

God..someone drilled and tapped THAT receiver ?!?!?!?

You think they could have picked a scrubbed Mauser or something...

Bubba has no remorse :(.

Well I was thinking of making my own mount to look sort of like these

just so the scope is a bit off to the left and maybe a bit higher for the bent bolt I have.

A moment of silence for a once wonderful firearm......

It's already a bubba, but to add sky-high see-through turrets, such that your lower jaw is where your cheek should be on the buttstock, just so you can switch between scope and iron sights, creates an abomination.

I'd say one or the other. Stick with irons, or sell the un-buggered parts to restore a restorable sporter, and go to low rise scope mounts with a nice sporter stock.
