I’m looking to treat myself to a 2011 style pistol. I’ve got the funds as well as the go for it from the wife.

So school me on 2011s. I’m looking currently at an STI DVC Limited in .40

I am planning on shooting IPSC with the pistol as well.

Thoughts, concerns, issues I could run into?

Any reason to go 9mm over .40?

I don’t know much about 2011s but I would say if you’re shooting IPSC in Canada there’s no reason to go with 9mm (minor power factor) since our mags are capped at 10 rounds. You’d be at a disadvantage shooting Standard Minor (not so much in other countries).

Is .40 the go to when shooting ipsc? Im liking the STI DVC Tactical but its only 9mm or .45

Depends on the division. My thought on it is buy what you like and just have fun competing in whatever division your firearm falls under. If you get to the point where you feel your choice of firearm is holding you back get whatever gun you think is going to make you better. End of the day it doesn't really matter as long as you enjoy it.

It’s a function of cost. .40 is the most economical way to shoot Major in IPSC Standard. If you’re going to shoot 9mm in Standard, by a Shadow or a Shadow 2 and shoot it SAO. You’ll be just as competitive as everyone else shooting Standard Minor - and at a fraction of the cost of a 2011.

I like singe stack 1911's and I have a few 2011's. They are the same functionally, and will both hold 10 rounds in the magazine in Canada. As mentioned, it depends what division you want to compete in. Also 9mm will allow you to shoot minor classification in that division while .40 will allow you to shoot major. You can also shoot minor with .40 . I would suggest doing some research on the different divisions to see what appeals to you. Watch some you tube videos. It would be unfortunate to pick a gun/ caliber combination to shoot a particular division to find that it does not qualify for that division. There is no best gun or caliber.

I have a 40 built by Dan Beddall and it runs flawlessly. Not sure if there fixed but new 126 STI mags needed tuning to work. A problem you wouldn't expect for the price. Having said that, i bought 10 gen 2 for my 9 open gun and they all ran perfect out of the box.

Classic or production will be cheaper to start out in and practice with as they are predominantely 9mm caliber.

From cheapest to more expensive good choices for a standard gun are an STI edge, DVC or Atlas Titan in 40.
